Philippa Gregory is the author of many New York Times bestselling novels, including The Other Boleyn Girl, and is a recognized authority on women’s history. I love this trilogy. Many people have such a problem with the lead character in book 1, Beatrice Lacey, that they cannot fathom reading books 2 & 3. But if you do, you will be very surprised. These books must be read together to see the whole picture. This is one of my all time favorite trilogies or series by one of my favorite authors. Great, thought provoking read that you will not forget.

Compelling reading, another can't-put-it-down series of books! I did not give it 5 stars only because there are a couple of places in the plot where I said to myself, "Come on - really??" It was early in the author's career, so I think it was just that her skills were not yet as refined as they were eventually to become. But I wanted the series to continue! I'd have read more about these characters, to be sure. And where else can you find a story that tells you about life in a circus and how to catch a trout without a fishing rod?

I went and read some of the 1 star reviews just to see what was the problem. I guess I found this book riveting & describes how desperate people do desparate things. I got the feeling that Beatrice thought, "just this one terrible thing & then I am done." Kind of like a gambler that swears the next hit will pay off. But it was a tale of chasing what you don't have at the peril of what you do, & loosing it all. Sorry I loved it & am starting the 2nd book. Rarely do I watch a movie or read a book & not have a sense of what will happen next. This book has so many twists and turns that I never saw some of it coming. I stumbled on to the White Queen & Tudor series & really enjoyed her historical fiction. I was a bit disappointed when I realized it was not based on any real life event. But wow in the end it didn't disappoint. It is a dark tale, with really damaged characters.

This book is well written, though a bit odd at times. It offers a very honest and raw glimpse into the inner workings of a mind dedicated to a single cause. Beatrice, in the end, is by any measure a horrible person, yet because you are intimately acquainted with her mind, you can’t help but feel some pity for her. She didn’t start out that way. Due to her unyielding desires, the laws that govern her land and the choices of others, she becomes more and more withdrawn from human connection and hardened to the feelings of others. She is willing to hurt anyone that stands in her way and knows how to manipulate those around her to suit her purpose. Parts of the plot may be cringe worthy, but it’s such a profound description of human experience that it makes those parts interesting. Overall it’s pretty good.

I cannot understand why anyone would give this book more than 1 star. One other reviewer stated that it is like reading the biography of a sociopath and I agree. I, too, kept waiting for some redeeming event but it just gets colder, darker and more depressing as it goes along. It left me feeling kind of stunned, sad and sick to my stomach. I absolutely will not read the other books in this series. This book was not a delight to read-it became a ponderous chore. Couldn't wait to be done. I won't include any spoilers in this review but the heroine is sickening. There is nothing heroic, or even human, about her. Other reviewers state that she is the heroine you love to hate but I just plain couldn't stand her or this novel. I have never written such a scathing review of a book before. This one, however, deserves it.

There are over 200 reviews so of course I won't rehash the plot, and I don't know if this review will ever even be read since it is so far down the line. However I was shocked by the low ratings. From what I can gather this author has a wide following with her later books. Wideacre was her first book, the first of a trilogy and the first book of hers I have read. Since I came to this novel with no previous expectations based on her later work I was able to enjoy it very much since I had no preconceptions. This is definately a saga, and will not be something for everyone since it does have an incestuous relationship, but that is not the core nor the heart of the novel. At its heart this is the story of how far a determined, unwavering woman will go to secure for herself the land that she loves. That doesn't sound like a bad thing but it becomes one when her desire for the land blinds her to the consequences of her increasingly horrid actions. I would like to say a lot more about this absorbing novel but I don't want to reveal to much.. I hate spoilers in reviews!I guess I will content myself by saying please don't be put off this book by the negative reviews from people who came to this story with preconceived notions. It is absorbing, masterfully written and darkly fascinating. It sort of reminds me of Through A Glass Darkly which was published in the late 80's I think and has a devoted "cult" following. Also, if you like Anne Rivers Siddons I think you will like this book as well. Even though Siddons books are on the surface nothing like this one (place, time periods etc.) the dark heart of Ruth Yancey Fox from her brilliant novel Foxes Earth can be felt in Beatrice Lacey the anti-heroine of Wideacre.I very much loved this book and hope that one more positive review may encourage more readers to take a chance on it.A side note for Kindle readers.....ugh the scan from print to ebook format made for lots of errors. Nothing that takes away from the joy of reading the book, but punctuation errors are pervasive.

This book has a lot of great journal articles/book chapters about the subject of inequality (focus on race, gender, class as title states) Some of it is foundational theory, some of it is research based, some of it puts forward ideas about inequality and there are arguments from both sides about what causes inequality and what we should do about it. Fascinating book and I highly recommend reading it even if it's just for your personal use! I had to read it for a class and am so glad I was introduced to it.

I am using this for school and so I haven't read everything, but many of these pieces I believe EVERYONE should read. When I read "Missing Class" and "Nickel and Dimed," I was saying "This is me! This is so and so!" Yes, there are pieces that are tough to get thru, but others are in today's language and are soooo relevant. I'm glad I'm having to read it for school :)

Thought i was buying a "like used" book. Looks pretty worn out and discolored.

Some of these illustrations are different approaches to selling Income Protection insurance, some are how to sell to employers, business owners, wealthy people, and even people that are already covered by their group Disability Insurance.There is even an illustration on convincing someone to sell Income Protection Insurance (on page 50-51). My favorite napkin illustration is on page 8-9. In less than a minute it becomes brain dead obvious that you want what Income Protection insurance will do for you. That one illustration qualifies you as a prospect, and takes you right up to the close....as most others do as well. These illustrations are usually a few words, and maybe a few amounts of money. There is no illustrating skill needed. Any piece of paper or napkin will do.The reason I was recommended this book is to put my mind to how I could use the same format...the same concept (short illustration of a pointed question) to sell just about anything.If you sell Income Replacement insurance, this book is an obvious essential. But no matter what you sell, products or services, yo can adapt this concept and be able to present your idea anywhere, any time, and to anyone.

if you need to learn Illustrator, this is the book to get.

I actually sent this one back. I think the title is misleading because it sounds like it's a book for professionals (to me, at least). But it really is a book for beginning users of Illustrator. It says it prepares you for the ACP exam - which I thought must be difficult. But maybe not, because this book is really basic. I was looking forward to learning some advanced techniques and doing cool projects over the summer. But alas, it was not to be.I gave it three stars because it's probably pretty good for someone just starting out.

The story is touching without any hint of sentimentality. This book was concise but hit all of the major aspects of developing the mindset and mechanics needed to consistently have quality at bats and hit line drives to all fields. The price point was excellent and exceeded my expectations.

Decent read. Nothing new and informative for an experienced coach; for the newer coach, however, it will serve as a nice foundation for an education on hitting.

I enjoyed the 30 minutes that it took to read this book. Some good points to bring up to my players. Certainly worth the time.

Great teaching of fundamental hitting for the beginner up to the advanced hitter. Easy to follow instructions. Great for players and coaches.

Excellent write up of the process of just hitting. Hopefully, another book showing necessary drills will be following. Can't wait.

I was struggling with my hitting and a friend of mine referred me to this book. I must say that the author has done an amazing job breaking down the art of batting. Since reading the book I have practiced the tips and pointers the author has made regularly and its helped improve my swing drastically. If you're looking to improve your swing or just want to increase your knowledge about hitting, you have got to give this book a read. You will not regret it!

This book offers some great insights to take a hitter's ability to the next level. The book is easy to follow, to-the-point, and offers technical improvements for both beginners and advanced ball players. My son enjoyed it just as much as I did and he is already implementing elements from the book into his swing!

This short book was very helpful in understanding the various steps in hitting a baseball. Gave me more insight into the value of QAB's.
