Last of all is Jane Boleyn,the skilled courtier and maid of honor- whose testimony helped send her husband to the scaffold. This rich, absorbing novel is one of Ms Gregory's best, because she literally gives each woman her own voice. The writing style changes as each one speaks, so that the reading experience becomes more personal: you feel as if you KNOW these ladies, and this feeling leads you to care about them. I highly recommend this book.

This book makes a good follow-up to the movie "The Other Boleyn Girl," which I saw just before I read this book. The book is told from the perspectives of three women: Jane Boleyn (she refers to Anne as her "sister," which is confusing because she was her sister-in-law), Anne of Cleves and young Katherine Howard. The book's biggest flaw is that it was somewhat tedious to read Katherine's entries, with so much greedy focus on her possessions.It was interesting to read about an era vastly different from our own. Back then, a 50 year old was considered of "great age" (elderly) and impotence was often blamed on a curse, witch's spell or "ill-wishing."Court life was of course very interesting. Everyone around Henry was in danger - "The fire of the king's displeasure can burn up anyone".- "kinship with the king gives no immunity from fear, friendship with the king gives no safety." There was also no shortage of enemies within the court - "Everyone is always our enemy, but right now we are winning." Women were just pawns in the game.Philippa Gregory writes well and describes things in an interesting way, for example "Katherine holds his attention like a dancing mayfly holds the attention of the fat, gaping carp." The book's title is clever and explained towards the end of the book.

When it comes to historical fiction, I do think the most fascinating time period is the reign of King Henry VIII during the first half of the 16th century. Why? It was such a soap opera! Everything was done to excess—eating, drinking, gossiping, playing and most of all extraordinarily bad behavior. This book, part of the Plantagenet and Tudor Novels series by Philippa Gregory, tells the story of the fourth and fifth wives of old King Henry.No. 4 was Anne of Cleaves, the only one of his six wives to escape the marriage with her life intact. Henry despised her for many reasons, and only months after what he quickly considered a sham marriage, he caught the eye of 15-year-old Katherine Howard, portrayed in this book as a ditzy, greedy, vain and vapid little girl.While this fictional story that is faithful to the historical facts may read like a soap opera in the extreme, Philippa Gregory has written this book with a touch of literary genius. Each chapter is told in the first person by one of three people: Anne of Cleaves, Katherine Howard or Jane Boleyn, who served both Anne and Katherine as a lady-in-waiting and was the sister-in-law of the doomed Anne Boleyn. Gregory so deftly and vividly distinguishes each of these three women's personalities and voices that chapter titles are almost not needed. Read a few sentences, and you will know who is the narrator. It is an extraordinary writing feat that adds abundant richness to an already gripping narrative. And face it, that's tough to do when anyone who studied European history in high school already knows the tragic, gruesome and terror-filled ending.A valuable lesson to learn from this period of history: King Henry VIII may have received the crown humbly in 1509, but he turned into a tyrannical monarch who assumed he had the right to absolute power. He truly believed that whatever he did, no matter how horrific, violent or cruel, was the will of God. There were no checks and balances on his power. To silence his enemies, he killed them—thousands and thousands of them. He stole. He lied (a lot). He was duplicitous. He terrified an entire country. He proved that absolute power absolutely corrupts.

I love history, and imagining the lives of all those who lived and breathed before our own time. I've studied quite a bit of the Tudor era, and I like how Philippa Gregory takes historical fact and adds her own suggestions as to the motives of these historical figures. I like the personalization and the human element she puts on these very real people. My only critiques on The Boleyn Inheritance was that "the Boleyn Inheritance" was a phrase far too often repeated. It became redundant after awhile. I also felt that poor Katherine Howard was depicted as a bit too idiotic. Historically, she was a not very educated child; raised in a home with very little guidance and nurturing, this is true. However, she was just a child. A teenager could never hold a candle to the grace and intellect of Catherine of Aragon, or the wit and cosmopolitan air of Anne Boleyn. I thought it a bit unfair to depict her as such a total shallow idiot. Aside from these, I enjoyed this book very much.

Excellent reference guide

This is helpful for those interested in early Noritake. It has pictures of many patterns and marks but it is impossible to have them all. Many are noted as "mystery" if no assigned name was marked on the stamp. Many fall into this category in early Noritake.

I inherited my grandmother's Noritake china set when she died, and wanted to know the year of production and what it was worth. The pictures of the maker's marks and patterns were very useful. I discovered our pattern was made in 1931, and was worth about $2,500! Not that I would ever part with such a sentimental gift...It's just nice to know the history of something. Thanks to the author for her research!

DIdn't have all of the china patterns, including mine! Only the mark on the back. Disappointed.

Great reference book. I was able to locate not only the pattern but determine the year of production. A valuable reference for anyone interested in older Noritake.

Although it did have many pattern designs, it did not have the one I needed to find. However, I was able to figure out the date of the china so it was still beneficial.

A good read for those into British historical fiction, Andersen takes history and re-imagines it - what if Elizabeth Tudor had married and had a child and heir? It's a question history enthusiasts have asked themselves, and Andersen answers it well with continuing the Tudor saga forward. Filled with intrigue, action and great dialogue, it's a great read. Fans of Philippa Gregory will greatly enjoy it.

Excellent alternate-history novel. In this history re-imagined, Princess Elizabeth had gotten married to the King of Spain and had a daughter before she became Queen (a half-brother and a half-sister had become Regent before her.) Elizabeth is now Queen and her daughter is a young lady. The war between Catholics and Protestants is active in Britain and the rest of Europe, and a young lady close to Elizabeth is recruited as a spy to get to the bottom of a plot against the royal family relating to freeing Mary, Queen of Scots.It is an exciting drama with lots of period-correct historical details.We do not experience it live, but only relived, but there is some brutal soda-masochism in the religious battles. So, I would rate it PG.

This trilogy is a follow-up of another trilogy by this author ("The Boleyn Trilogy"), which I definitely recommend reading first. This series projects what could have happened if Queen Elizabeth I had married Philip of Spain and had a daughter. Characters from the first trilogy are adults now themselves with children who propel the plot. This trilogy is not quite as good as the Boleyn one because the fun of the first series is that the author's use of true history is so artfully and creatively woven into a whole new parallel plain of possibility. While this series does rely on that strategy, it's all too easy to confuse Elizabeth's fake daughter with the real Elizabeth as a youth. Since there is so much fiction utilizing this fascinating historical figure, there isn't much left to create that's original (unlike the first series which is very much original). That being said, this isn't just another Elizabeth novel... but only if you start with the other series so the fictional characters and hypothetical plot line can blend with the real facts of the period.

I have always been a lover of historic fiction and this great series is one of the best that I have found, this alternative story of the Tudor's history is very believeable and I cant wait for the next book to come out.

Confusing,at timed, the plot ends with another brewing. In actuality, the title is a bit misleading. Most of the tale revolves around Lucette. Lucette is not the Queens fictitious daughter. The daughter has only a minor role. At times the long sentences use phrases that confuse on first reading. The intrigues are fairly good.

I love Laura Andersen's books simply because she takes historical fiction to a whole new level by creating the "what-if" story. What if Anne Boleyn had borne a son? What if Queen Elizabeth had married? I love it!

Laura draws us in to the world that might have been and its full of intrigue and drama! I loved the first part of the Tudor legacy novels and this book was great! Can't wait for the next one!

Fascinating history I enjoy wrapped some very complex charcters. This was well done! I look forward to more of her work.

The first time I saw this book it was in a fellow designer's bookshelf and I thought the title was humorous and very well targeted. Anybody who knows type understand the joke in "anyone who letterspaces blackletter type would steal sheep" and if you haven't heard of the quote nor get the joke then you are probably a type beginner who could use this book.I don't agree with other reviews stating that the book is too basic and so it serves no purpose. Yes, it is basic, but 170+ pages of good basic introductory material. I would recommend it for student graphic designers, artists and multimedia designers who work with type but are not necessarily drawn to it. This book gives you the basics with a lot of examples and a humoristic approach that should keep you entertained long enough for you to grasp the ideas.This is not a reference and it doesn't talk about advanced matters, but it will provide a tremendous wealth of knowledge to anybody new to type specifics. Sure one could get the basics from a 7-page pamphlet, but design is about making sense of the ideas and I can't imagine a beginner understanding all these concepts without the help of an array of examples such as the ones contained in this small book.

I first came in contact with this book way back before Adobe press re-released and updated it. It's a little pricey for its size, but it's always been a great book to have as a designer in order to explain to friends what exactly typography is without boring them to tears: but more than that, it's a great book to loan to clients in order to get them to understand the work you're doing for them and why not every opinion is equal.So, after recommending it to my print manager here in NYC, I figured I'd buy a copy after all these years - it's still a nifty wee book, very much worth the money.

SummaryI feel like the book has a strange format, but I was pleasantly surprised - It continuously compares typography to various things such as traffic, rooms in a house, facial expressions, etc. I was expecting a direct (and perhaps more boring) approach to learning more about typography. I expected definitions, examples, and a simple tool for learning how to use type on web pages. Instead, what I got was a much less traditional approach. I feel more inspired and aware of type and how it works in the world as a whole rather than for a specific medium.BackgroundI am a web designer and front-end developer. I love to design and am adept at slicing those designs into html and css. But I needed to dig a bit deeper into the core of design, which I believed, and now know is type. A co-worker recommended this book and despite mixed reviews, I bought it. I expected to have a direct approach to learning type, but instead I felt like I learned type backwards or indirectly somehow.The BookI was disappointed at first as I read through several pages. I was eager to dive in and start learning the technical side of typography, but the book seemed to have other plans for me. Instead, it addresses how type works in various sectors of society: business, travel, shopping, etc. It explains how type has elements that convey emotion and how you can use it. It gives examples of how one might solve old problems simply by using type. The book really provides a foundation for solving problems. By the end of the book, I somehow knew how type worked and as I skim back through I have somehow grasped the concepts more than I thought.The FormatThere are many comments about the layout / format of the book. The small red text on the side of the pages is optional, but quite often where you find some great tips and information. I didn't find it terribly difficult to read - it's small and red but very short. The book is well-designed, showing how designers use grids and adjustments to improve readability. It's short, easy to read, and yet packed full of interesting and useful information.This book certainly wouldn't hurt to own - it's a great resource for going back and getting a quick tip or piece of inspiration: four stars for me.

I'm an engineer, not a designer. I was looking for a general feeling for typecase use, not step-by-step instructions (which I don't think could exist anyway in design), and I thought this book was just right.

This book is required reading by my professor. It's one of the easiest books to read and understand. Because it is designed by a graphic artist and type developer, I would assume that this book would communicate ideas and information easily (which it does). Created for a European audience, the book has smaller sized text and a column of red footnotes on most, if not all pages. This could distract, annoy or put off many who are not used to smaller sized fonts in a book. Overall, I enjoy looking through this well designed, informative book and would definitely keep it for reference in the future.

This is the second biography of a major sports figure by Roland Lazenby I've read this year (the first being Showboat) and it's almost as if these were written by different authors. Not in a negative sense but the depth of the research done into Michael Jordan's lineage is far more extensive than that presented in Showboat. I think it also reflects the need to get the full context to try to encompass one of the most celebrated and successful sports figures ever. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and left with even greater appreciation for MJ's staggering success and the extremely good fortune he had due to a few key figures in his life.

MJ. His Airness. Jordan Air. Michael Jordan is arguably, the best basketball player that has ever laced up his shoes. Fans all have favorite memories; his game-winning basket for the national title at UNC, the flu game, the jams, the high scores. He is one of the most easily identifiable individuals in the world as his fame spread past the courts to advertising and the movies. But who is this man? Roland Lazenby has written a memoir biography of Michael Jordan. He takes the reader through his childhood and the family structure and issues. Jordan's time at the University of North Carolina and his relationship with coach Dean Smith is covered in depth as the reader learns how Jordan improved his game. Jordan was a master trash-talker and rode others mercilessly when they didn't measure up to his standards. At the end of the book, the reader is left with a complete picture of this complicated man. Leaders are honored and adored, but few really understand the drive it takes to be the best. To spur others to achieve greatness, often leaders are less than kind and often even cruel, and that is also a part of leadership. Jordan has great athletic talent, an incredible energy and drive for success, loyalty to those he trusts, and has given the world moments that will always be remembered. At our core, we all want 'to be like Mike'. This book is recommended for sports fans and those interested in reading about how one individual finds the drive to compete and excel, until they are the best in the world.

This book covers everything Michael Jordan. That's no understatement as the beginning text goes into detail about the ancestry of the Jordans. Then we transition into Jordan's childhood - his friends and memories; his teenage and college years; his early and later pro years, his time with the Wizards, and his recent years as the owner of the Bobcats. From information gleaned from friends, close affiliates - business and personal, teammates, coaches, family, and Michael himself we a lucid view into his life and his mindset. The mindset of the most competitive person conceivable, for better (multiple championships and ultimate domination on the basketball courts) or for worse (gambling problems, scarred relationships, and a perhaps unwarranted and inopportune incrimination in a hall of fame speech).

I was a kid of the 90s, the Jordan generation and spent countless hours pounding a basketball in my backyard, terrorizing my parents with constant thuds as I executed passes to myself off the house walls before driving to my hoop, red, over-sized Bulls jersey worn constantly, emblazoned predictably with the iconic '23'. Jordan brings back memories of school holidays, carefree times and childhood innocence.That's why going back and reading this comprehensive Jordan biography as an adult was both refreshing and insightful, even though it is difficult to find a more exposed or covered sports star in our time. What more could there possibly be to say? But that I think is the beauty of this book - it doesn't have any earth shattering revelations, or new exclusive, but it is comprehensive and brings all the stories together in one.It meant that I could revisit Jordan's history, learn about the formative years before he was the global megastar (and while I was just a toddler on the other side of the world) and contextualize his accomplishments. In particular it gives great insight into the mythical tale of the high school coach who "dropped Jordan from his team" (so much more complex than it gets presented as and in fact that coach had a huge influence on Jordan and great relationship).As a fan it's easy to look back on the six championships of the Bulls era and assume they were a highly performing, high achieving team celebrating each others success. They were in fact almost dysfunctional and at each other constantly. But it was that competitiveness, that feeling of being slighted that drove Jordan and in turn made Jordan challenge and push his teammates.It's a wonderful insight into the personality of someone extraordinary. Jordan is regularly described as a difficult teammate, someone who couldn't understand people accepting less than the best or not working as hard as possible, someone who put in more time and effort than seemed sustainable, had no tolerance for fools and could generally be rude, introverted, untrusting and mercenary in dealing with people to get what he wanted. I could not help thinking afterwards the similarity in personality between Jordan and revered business figures of our time - Jobs, Bezos, Musk - who all demonstrate an almost identical personality.It's certainly not all rosy - the gambling, the messy family situation, etc - but I think this is what makes it an even more important read for people like me who grew up with Jordan and still revere him as the greatest of all time.In summary, I would say that I started the booking thinking whether I really need to invest in almost 700 pages of Jordan history but it didn't take long to develop into a compelling read and one that helped fill in a number of blanks beyond the mainstream memories of a generation and round out the story.
