As a philosopher who is often asked about what philosophy is, what its practical uses are, where should a person start if they want to study philosophy carefully, etc, I was genuinely excited to pick up Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction. I had figured that I would read and then recommend it as the best starting point for the philosophy novice. I was not totally wrong, but neither was I totally right. The books merits are that it introduces the general reader to some of the big branches of philosophy (epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, etc), some of the big names in philosophy (Socrates, David Hume, Epicurus, John Stuart Mill), and some of the various schools of philosophy (idealism, empiricism, rationalism, etc). However, it does so in a very scattered manner and the terms are not as clearly defined as one would like, especially since the book is marketed toward those who are beginners in philosophy. The author on one page is talking about ethics, then miracles, then idealism... but it is scattered rather than connected. It helps, however, that the author is good with words, because while it is scattered it is not boring.I would recommend this book to beginners, but books like Bertrand Russell's The Problems of Philosophy are better introductions to the field.

This is a nice introduction to Philosophy but it is not a conventional one. It is not a history, for example, though it has historical elements; and it is not a delineation of philosophy's specific fields (e.g. ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and so on), though it talks about some of those fields. Nor does it attempt to provide a systematic list of philosophy's principal themes. It refers to some classic texts in philosophy (Plato's Crito; Hume's Essay on Miracles, et al.) but it does not, of course, reprint them within this small space. At some points it creates a one-sided dialogue with the reader, in which the reader is encouraged to examine certain passages in the classic texts. At other points there are discussions of isms and current themes, e.g., the rights of animals. There is a very useful, but brief bibliography at the end of the book that suggests opportunities for further readings. The bottom line is that the book jumps from place to place, idea to idea, philosopher to philosopher, and is a bit of a jumble. At the same time there is a sense of unity in the text that arises from the genial demeanor of the author and his reassurances offered to the reader that the doing of philosophy is not an impossible task and that the reader is probably up to the job.The result is more of a 'good read' than a coherent introduction to the subject of philosophy. The writing is pleasant and lucid and many important subjects are addressed. The book is relatively unique in its inclusion of elements of eastern philosophy and the manner in which eastern philosophic themes can be woven together with western ones. There are a set of nice illustrations. All in all this is a pleasant book on the general subject of philosophy. While not a systematic introduction to the subject it is a leisurely and attractive 'discussion of' philosophy.

There are many things I am not good at. I’ve gone to a few activities at Painting with a Twist but my portraits are, well, pretty terrible. I can grill a steak but beware if you eat anything I’ve cooked more complicated than a slab of beef. I love baseball and I used to be pretty decent at it but at no point in time have I been a very strong batter. Now that I’ve tooted by own humble-horn let me add to the above list the broad topic of philosophy. I love epistemology and logic but I don’t much care for metaphysics and ethics. It’s probably because I’m not very good at working through all the philosophical positions that surround metaphysics and ethics. But Edward Craig won’t let me off the hook on any aspect of philosophy. If I or anyone else were to claim that philosophy is useless then I or “they will be talking about the ineffectuality of certain types of thought, or of human beings’ incapacity to deal with certain types of question. And then instead of rejecting philosophy [I or] they will have become another voice within it” (2). We are all philosophers of one sort or another. For people like me who have only read a handful of philosophical works, Craig’s contribution to the VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION series is helpful in most regards. Before I get to those helpful items, let me just mention one problem I had with the volume.Craig is a Brit and he writes like one. I’m an American and though I’ve read plenty of Shakespeare, grew up reading the King James Bible, and love British television shows like “Good Neighbors,” “The Vicar of Dibley,” and “Keeping Up Appearances,” I found the prose of PHILOSOPHY: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION a bit wonky at times. When you read it, be prepared to re-read some sentences so you are clear on what he is discussing. Admittedly, the issue is more likely my own than Craig’s. It isn’t his fault I’m a simple minded American. But it would have been nice if the prose had been easier to read.Let’s move on. What makes this volume a worthy contribution to human knowledge and understanding?First, the book’s format is based upon specific philosophers and their positions on different aspects of philosophy. Chapter two covers ethics and Craig discusses Plato’s work CRITO in which he details a conversation between the soon-to-be executed Socrates and his friend Crito. Chapter three covers epistemology and there we encounter David Hume and his analysis of miracles. Chapter four is all about metaphysics and we meet a Buddhist named Nagasena and a king named Milinda.Other chapters deal with specific themes like consequentialism, contract theory, and integrity (chapter 5) or Idealism, dualism, and skepticism (chapter 6).Chapter 7 is perhaps the best chapter of them all. Craig deals with Descartes, Hegel, Darwin, and Nietzsche. And in so doing he gives us some interesting problems to think about. When discussing the implications of Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, Craig wonders what would happen if Descartes had lived after Darwin. What would Descartes do with the implication that the mind is the product of natural processes and not the gift from God that he had supposed? How radical would it change his entire philosophy?Chapter 8 of this very short introduction to philosophy draws out the implications of philosophical thought on different groups like the individual, the State, women, and philosophers. Philosophy has direct bearing on just about everything and this book has certainly opened up my eyes to the truth of that. But this book is only a very short introduction and the bibliography serves us a springboard to other works including those by Bertrand Russell, David Hume, and so many more.If you are interested in philosophy and don’t know a lot about the topic, this is the book for you. If it does its job, it will spur you onto reading more books on philosophy covering the topics of logic, metaphysics, ethics, and epistemology. The VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION series has them all and I plan on reading each of them to try and get a grip on the philosophical world. If you think you will never use philosophy then, well, you really need to read this book. Philosophy isn’t dead. It isn’t useless. It is part of everything.

Review

“This book has a lot of code. This feature is quite welcome for newbies and experts who want to replicate the successful robots detailed here. Another more-than-appreciated feature of this book is the section called ‘Software Engineering with ROS.’ … The book closes with advanced tools such as advanced debuggers and real-time implementations in ROS.” (Ramon Gonzalez Sanchez, Computing Reviews, computingreviews.com, July, 2016)

Purports to be a "ROS reference". Nothing of the sort. Beyond some vague preamble about ROS it just a collection of disjointed academic papers on applications. You can get all this for free on the net. The ROS wiki is a much more useful source and free. Returned my copy.

This book was a Best of the Best for the month of August 2018, as selected by Stevo's Book Reviews on the Internet.

The Frog and Toad books were my son's favorite growing up. I loved them, and I kept them for many years. When my grandson was old enough to understand the stories and start to read, my son asked me if I still had the Frog and Toad books. Of course I did! My grandson is now enjoying these--over thirty years later! They are great books about friendship, helping each other, and taking care of each other. I still love these, and I take every opportunity to read them to my grandson!

I have very fond memories of reading Frog and Toad when I was little. They were funny then and they're funny now, some thirty-odd years later. I have purchased three of the Frog and Toad books for my child and love reading them to him. All of the books I purchased were hard cover, but only two came with outer sleeves (which I honestly hate book sleeves anyways so I doubt I hang on to them). There are several collections of stories so if you're trying to remember which one contained a favorite chapter/story of yours from childhood, here is a list of Frog and Toad collections with which chapters they contain:"Frog and Toad Are Friends":SpringThe StoryA Lost ButtonA SwimThe Letter"Frog and Toad All Year":Down the hillThe CornerIce CreamThe SurpriseChristmas Eve"Frog and Toad Together":A listThe GardenCookiesDragons and GiantsThe Dream"Days with Frog and Toad":TomorrowThe KiteShiversThe HatAlone

I bought Arnold Lobel's books in hardcover when they first came out. Our children adored the stories and illustrations and they wanted us to read them every night at bedtime. By following along as we read Lobel's and other "I Can Read" books, our children learned to read before they entered school. The stories are definitely designed to facilitate reading skills but they are also engaging, with a focus on friendship, love and behaviour. I cannot recommend these charming books enough. Now for the negative comments: The Kindle versions are extremely disappointing; the font and illustrations are quite small. One can double tap and increase the font size a little bit, in small sections. This doesn't allow for reading to a child while smoothly running a finger under the words being read, as it would if all of the text on a page was enlarged at once. Running a finger under the text is a significant step in teaching a child to read while using "I Can Read" books, so this particular "double tap" method defeats that purpose. In addition, the illustrations don't seem as vibrant as in the hardcover books and they can't be enlarged. The publisher did a real disservice to both the author and the readers by the poor job they did in transferring the books into digital format.Even with my dislike for the way in which the publisher digitalized this book, it is still a very worthwhile purchase. It's message is timeless and the stories and illustrations are sure to appeal to both it's target audience and to the adults reading it to them.

Arnold Lobel was one of the few authors who can read their own work well. This is one of the best audio books, bar none. Arnold is not only better than any other author, but most of the professional actors who have done audio books. What I should say is that he tells the stories, he doesn't read them. The music that accompanies the telling, I can take or leave.

Arnold Lobel was such a wonderful writer, I'm not quite sure what to say about this book or how to say it. For now I'll leave that to the other 5-star reviews. I'm just here to tell you the Kindle edition needs some work. The problem is this isn't really an ebook but a set of scans - single images, two pages at a time, so that you can't even read them in portrait mode. Perhaps the newer Fire models can accommodate this somehow, but on both my Paperwhite and my son's 7" Fire, as well as the Kindle desktop application, each two-page scan is forced into a single landscape display. I don't exaggerate when I say these are nothing but images of the pages. There seems to be no interaction available with the text, and zooming in on the illustrations isn't possible. Even basic pinch zooming in on the entire page isn't permitted.I don't approve of giving good books poor ratings because of publisher laziness. If I did, this one would get 2 or 3 stars. The colors are a little more vibrant than in the newer print editions, and for what it's worth the scans are clear. The table of contents does work, but not from the Go To menu, only on the actual Table of Contents page.If you already own these books in print and you have a big Kindle or REALLY good eyesight, go for it. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and buy the physical books. Lobel's work is essential for both children and adults, stunningly wise at times and always beautiful. The Frog and Toad stories are among his best, and these ones are particularly good.

Review

“The best nonfiction book of 2018. … I can’t remember a book in recent years that taught me quite so much. Every page is vivid and rich. … A model for what serious reportage should be.” (Stephen L. Carter, Bloomberg)“[A] sweeping historical narrative. … Intimate, meticulously reported and captivating. … Earl Swift masterfully reveals Tangier as it is. … The definitive account of what once was and of what will soon be no more.” (Washington Post (A Notable Book of the Year))“In a gripping, 400-page tome, Swift gracefully outlines the harsh inevitability of global warming and how the people on its front lines try to keep living their lives in its face. ... Fantastic.” (Outside (A Best Book of the Year))“A masterful narrative of place, people, and nature, supported by the best sort of on-the-ground journalism. … In Chesapeake Requiem, Swift does what only the best environmental writers can do.” (Christian Science Monitor (A Best Book of the Year))“Earl Swift has long shown a talent for locating the big and poignant stories that lay hidden in plain sight within the day-to-day lives of unsung Americans. With Chesapeake Requiem, his gift is on fine display. Here is a big story about a small place, a canary-in-the-coalmine tale that’s sad and beautiful, haunting and true.” (HAMPTON SIDES, New York Times bestselling author of In the Kingdom of Ice)“Deeply moving. ... Gorgeous. ... A truly remarkable book.” (BETH MACY, New York Times bestselling author of Dopesick and Truevine)“A provocative and respectful study of a culture that may soon be lost.” (Esquire, “The Best Nonfiction Books of 2018 (So Far)”)“Swift paints vivid portraits of both the natural environment and the individuals and institutions of this close-knit community. ... Harrowing and moving. ... A well-rounded portrait of a rural community both dependent on and threatened by its natural environment.” (Science)“Swift does such a good, interesting job of telling the stories of the people who live on this island. … He really gets [the] hard questions about the reality of climate change and … how we make decisions as a country and as a community about what we value.” (Heather Hansman, NPR’s All Things Considered)“One of the most powerful ways to tell the story of global climate change is to tell it local. And this meticulous, compassionate look at the fishermen and their families, who have for generations made a home on a tiny island in Chesapeake Bay, is a vivid portrait of what we are losing—and why we may fail to stop that loss.“ (Deborah Blum, NPR’s Science Friday)

As I sit in my living room on Tilghman Island, Maryland reading over Swift's account, I struggle with the realization that his story has ended and that the end of Tangier Island too is near. I'm sad for both.Swift's reporting and objectivity on a very emotional subject are par excellence. I was struck by his ability to tell the story as an insider yet step outside that view to keep us from thinking he was too sentimental.Tilghman may very well be the first casualty in America of sea level rise that is caused by global warming but as we read the story it is natural to think that maybe the islanders's assumption of land erosion holds water, no pun intended. The most stunning revelation for me is that the image of a bygone civilization that survives to this day is completely wrong. The fact that this tiny island has been touched by the ugly hand of opioid addiction and drug dealing (as is the case here on Tilghman) shattered my perception of a place I'd like to escape to to flee the madness we face as a culture today.Nonetheless read the story and draw your own conclusions. Thanks Mr. Swift for a job well done.

I think Earl Swift did a great job with this. As a "come here," with the disadvantages that brings, he managed to win over the Tangier residents so they would confide in him and include him in their daily life. I think not everyone could do that so well. As a result, he painted a vivid picture of the people and their way of life.As a person who has spent some time boating on the bay, and experienced the weather challenges from time to time, I admire the grit and knowledge of these hard-working island people. I know I would be hard pressed to do the job they do in helping me have the crabs and oysters I enjoy so much. That's what surprises me about their passive acceptance of the changes they all see on the island, and look for others to do something about it. Swift describes very well the prevailing attitude that "something ought to be done," but then no one does it. And complaining that others aren't doing enough about their situation. That seems completely contrary to the first sentence of this paragraph. My family tree shows generations of people that moved from New England and Virginia, through the Midwest, and on to the West Coast as they sought to improve their prospects. Covered Wagon folks and Dust Bowl Okies did the same. Yet these Tangier people just hang on as things deteriorate, and blame someone else. Knowlng all the good things they do, makes this even harder to understand. Many are devoutly religious, and think all is in God's hands. But, God did give us brains and expects us to use them.I am sure the Tangier folks know what they are talking about when they describe erosion as one of their problems (I think that's all Ooker does recognize). Yet cities all around, including nearby Norfolk, see clear proof of sea level rise. Why would Tangier be exempt? Why can't Ooker and his fellow residents see that both are happening? Ooker and the other islanders may think he won the debate with Al Gore, but month by month they will see they are wrong. And the fact that they think our President gives this any thought at all, and will bail them out, is completely naive. When the village finally disappears we will all have lost something. Kudos to Swift for describing it so well. But, ultimately my take on the book is a sadness that these Tangier residents are just standing by and waiting for someone else to change things. Which probably will never happen. Yes, a new jetty here, and some other patchwork there, will prolong things a bit, but before long it will all just fade away. What's their plan for that?

I grew up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore so I was excited to read this book. It is extremely well written - almost poetic in style - and very well researched. The book tends to alternate between fishing trips with the local watermen, history of the region, and discussions of the rising sea level and erosion of the island. The daily activities and character of the residents are discussed somewhat, but I found myself wanting to know much more. For instance, what do the island’s women do most of the day? He mentions in passing that the women run the island’s shops and restaurants. It would’ve been interesting if he’d spent a few days with some of the women and given more detail about their lives. He does briefly mention two women who own a restaurant, but does not provide much detail. What are the best dishes they cook, how do they feel about the tourists, what happens when they run out of an ingredient, are they happy with their lives? Do any women work the water? Likewise, I would have liked to hear how the island’s children feel about their lives - are they happy? Do they long to escape from the island, when they go to the mainland what do they think, etc. I am also curious to know how people who are not Methodist feel about living on the island - do they feel discriminated against or harassed or pressured? Do any of the spouses have extramarital affairs, and if so, what are the consequences? Does anyone on the island drink moderately or are all drinkers problem drinkers, as implied? I would recommend this book, especially if you have an interest in the subject matter, but it is best consumed in small doses, and I wish it were more captivating.

Couched as a "what the heck are they thinking" investigative report into the insular society of Tangier Island, this is really a portrait of an American community. Much emphasis is placed on how "different" and "unique" they are, but the overwhelming message is that the people of Tangier are pretty much just like everyone else. They cling to the past as part of their identity, believe what is convenient, hold opinions based on self-interest, and act like generally decent human beings while living in a challenging environment. The author asks, is this worth saving? And then spends the rest of the book making the emotional case that it is. Since he is looking for the reader to answer that question, as we all must as we support or reject the spending of public monies, my response is "no". There is, despite the author's -- and the Tangier inhabitants themselves' -- nostalgic yearnings, nothing special about this place or these people. Their forebears picked an unstable environment to plant themselves in, and it is time to move on. Cool that it is being documented, but it is just another blip in the history of the Bay.

Delightful! Great concept well executed.

Love this book, bought one for myself and as a gift. All the children love it.

This was a very nice gift to give, great quality and creative fun.

My grandson has really enjoyed this book!

I was looking forward to seeing this publication by Mr. Sabini. It is unique and marvelous. The stencil shapes are embedded into the pages of the book so that they will not get lost and the collection of patterned paper at the back is stunning. With this books kids of all ages can create incredible collage animals for their very own paper zoo.

Beautiful book. Bought 2 for both grandchildren!!

My 3-year old daughter got this as a holiday gift and LOVES it. It's so simple and gives her a calm, quiet, albeit messy, creative outlet. The book is made well enough where I imagine the art will be kept for years to come. She's not old enough to make a complicated collage - she refuses to cover a whole page before moving on to the next animal but to that I say this book allows one to remove the designed card from the book at a later date and add to it!I will be buying these for all birthdays going forward. There's no age limit. There are endless possibilities when you add your own paper from that one time in that strange town.

WARNING: The paperback edition is not the same as the hardback edition. They really shouldn't be listed together. The paperback edition has a big sign on the back of the book stating, "This is a special version of a textbook widely used by universities throughout the world. Pearson published this edition for the benefit of students outside the United States and Canada. If you purchased this book within the United States or Canada it has been imported without the approval or permission of the Publisher, and it does not include all of the same Problems." The Amazon product description did not disclose these important differences, and none of the third-party sellers seem to disclose this difference. As a result, I purchased the book, and it turned out my son couldn't use it for his class because, according to his Physics teacher, eight of the problem sets are different. Argh.

I used this book for two semesters of physics; I didn't like it. I found the explanations lacking and non-intuitive, and not many tips how to solve problems, but also the equations are not listed clearly. I found my self going on youtube and reading knight-jones-field college physics book as a supplement just to figure out what the book was trying to say.To give an example of why I didn't like this book: In chapter 22 under Energy in EM waves, the author makes zero attempt to help you understand notation. I had no clue what a rms value was. Only after looking online did I find out that if you use the rms valuesthe S ----> S(avg).

This is the physics book that a relative is currently using in his high school, and it is absolutely terrible. I often have to help him, and this book always leaves me scratching my head at how they get from point A to point B. I am no lightweight, either. I got straight A's in physics when I was in high school, and passed the AP exam, and I am a teacher now. If I am struggling so much, that means there is something wrong. Each section starts out with lots of background text, aka fluff that isn't going to help at all with grasping the concepts. Unfortunately, this background sometimes goes right in to the descriptions of formulae and the concepts of the lesson, so it is difficult to skip. Luckily, the formulae are in bold, so they are at least easy to see on the page. But you have to read through the text to understand what they mean, and the text is so poorly written that you often have to read through over and over again just to wrap your head around the formula and what they are trying to say about it.This brings me to the example problems. For what they are, they are fine, and they often make the concepts easier to understand than the actual lesson. So I have no real complaints about the examples that are included. They are just sorely inadequate, which I will explain next. The real glaring problem with this physics course is the problems that students have to do. They take the basic concepts (which students probably didn't even fully grasp in the first place because the lessons are so poorly done), and escalate them to impossible levels. It's fine to ask students to think outside the box, but asking them to think outside the box without anything similar even mentioned in the lesson, almost no information given, and having to combine formulae in crazy ways is just absurd. The book does not prepare them for that in any way. It's like learning to swim in a pool (the lesson) and then being thrown into the middle of the ocean while a storm is raging (the problems). One problem that still sticks out to me asks the student to calculate the Bernoulli forces on a house with a flat roof of given area in a certain speed wind (no information besides flat roof, roof area, and wind speed). The problem was, the lesson had not even gotten close to explaining that kind of thing. It had briefly mentioned Bernoulli forces on airplane wings and spheres, but all of it was about pressure and different flow rates. There wasn't even a suggestion about calculating forces with only one flow rate. And there were lots of other problems with the same problem. I have eventually been able to figure out most of them by careful reading and creative combinations of formulae, but not all. And the amount of effort that these problems required of me, someone who has already learned and understood this stuff and who wrestles with math formulae pretty frequently, is just absurd. If these problems are so difficult for me to do, imagine how much worse they must be for the students who have never done it before.I do not recommend this book. If you are a teacher, homeschooler, administrator, school board, or anyone else choosing curriculum and trying to do well by their students, do not select this book. It is a horrible excuse for a learning resource, and will only set students up for failure and disillusionment with science. A great teacher may be able to compensate for some of this, but don't rely on that. And if the teaching is great, how much better will students learn if they also have a great book. So go and find that great book. Do not buy this!

I needed a text to review physics in preparation for the state licensing exam. I went online to find reviews and Giancoli was the top rated for non calculus based AP physics. I also used Holt and Cutnell and Johnson. I found Giancoli to be the best of them. Concepts are fully explained with no corners cut. Towards the end of chapters they often have real world application examples. There are many problems that get systematically more difficult and are rated by difficulty so that it is easy to find beginner, intermediate and advanced problems. Solutions are provided for the odd numbered problems.I tutor so I generally use the book that the student's class is using. I find that I frequently turn to Giancoli for better problems and clearer examples to show the students. It is the best non-calculus text I have seen. I suppose the best indicator is that I enjoy using it. I don't find myself on guard for the next mistake or poor explanation or missing link in the thought chain. It is a pleasure to use.I found the other books lacking. Holt seemed to be a template to push teachers to purchase products and services. It is somewhat like Windows 8. It is clearly a product of too many MBAs and not enough educators. I am still trying to understand the appeal of Cutnell and Johnson. I find it has holes in the progression of the topic. It does not have the rigor of Giancoli.Regarding Hewitt and Halliday and Resnick. Hewitt deserves its fame as a great conceptual physics book. However I would like to see more problems included.I learned physics from the second edition of Halliday and Resnick. I recently used the 7th edition while working with a student. I am still getting to know this edition. What I like is that it is detailed and certainly has better and more examples than what I learned on. It also has more photos and color photos - a vast improvement :) So far so good. I will do a detailed comment on it after I have had more time.

This textbook was a lifesaver. My school uses a REALLY bad textbook. You should probably take calculus if you are using this textbook. Yes, you don't need it, but I thought the concepts were easier to grasp because of calculus. (although it just might be because I hate algebra's long methods as opposed to easy calc) Idk, but this saved me on every exam.
