I had hopes for this book bc I loved the main idea. Paying for a date to a wedding. I even loved the Debra Messing movie that came out a few years ago with the same title and premise. This book was horrible. Think bridget Jones but even more in need of psychological help. Every paragraph had some kind of self deprecating thought. There was barely any seperation between characters so you never knew right away who said what. There were too many unnecessary paragraphs seperating one solid thought or event. And events that should have played a more important role, and should have gone into detail about, got tossed to the side for an inner monologue about how Sam was too fat or didn't deserve attention, blah blah blah. Never laughed out loud. Not romantic. Mostly neurotic with unrealistic scenarios. I hate that I wasted time reading this book.

Rather challenging to write, this review sits most squarely on the fence. As fans of British Comedy, we were hopeful about this book especially given it's PR promising the laugh-fest of the year. It falls short of that mark, however, the mark was set fairly high. There were some good laughs mainly attributable to the puppy brigade led by an engaging romp of fur named Harry. The characters were interesting but unbelievable at times which left the plot unrealistic in spots. A few creative twists, though, encouraged us to press on and, in true Brit-Com fashion with a stiff upper lip, we surged forward. Things were looking up we until turned into the end where there was not one.......at least, NOT a satisfactory end! Desperately seeking an epilogue or a sequel and finding none, we summed this up as an unacceptable state of affairs. We do NOT LIKE to be left hanging! If one needs to supply a satisfactory ending for some sense of closure after a 400 page read, might as well write the book! Therefore, mostly due to the ending or lack thereof, three stars - maybe three and a half in deference to the puppy brigade. There were some enjoyable moments so if you don't mind being left hanging, give it a try. The best we can advise: Read this one at your own risk!!!

4 Delightful Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟This book was an absolute pleasure to read, filled with fabulous characters and lots of laughs.... The plot was pretty straightforward and has been done before, but the characters really brought this book to life...Sam is not showing up to her BFF’s wedding alone, especially because her ex is the best man.... after telling a tiny lie to both her parents and BFF that she is dating somebody, Sam decides she needs to hire somebody to play the part... Jake is an actor needing a distraction and he will work cheap... i’m sure you can figure out what will happen.... but it is the humor, the pacing, and the wonderful characters that sets this book apart... in honor of Sam and her propensity to make a list... I will list my top five characters in this book....Sam... loved her, especially her inner dialogue... she was one of those characters I’d love to hang out with and have a girls night out with...2. Jake... just a good guy with a big heart... Who usually said the right thing, my favorite thing he said to Sam was ”you are the right size for you...”*sigh*3. Ruth... Sam’s mom, she really had some of the best lines in the book.... she truly loved her daughter, but sometimes wanted to insert herself a little too much in her life, she is a mom after all...4. Sarah... she didn’t have a big part in the book, but she was a good friend and I loved her stalking Waze...5. Harry... the dog.... he brought humor to every part of the book he was in...Absolutely recommend to all who Love a romance with a large dose of humor....*** thank you to the publisher, the author,Net Galley, and Rachel at Rachel‘s Random Resources for my copy of this book ***

This was truly a funny story. Sometimes when the blurb about a book says "a laugh out loud romantic story", I am skeptical. This book actually kept its promise. I truly enjoyed the escapades of the heroine who hires a man to be her wedding date because she is dateless and her former boyfriend is going to be the best man at the wedding. The week-long wedding activities give a lot of room for the main character to get into situations that are hilarious, while trying to hide the fact that her date is actually a stranger she has hired. Trying to fool her best friend (the bride), her former boyfriend, and her family makes for a fun read.

Your best friend's wedding is fast approaching, and your long-time boyfriend just dumped you in the most horrible way. You're the maid of honor, and you can't go alone. Then you find out the wedding and a week of pre-wedding events are being held at a luxury castle in Scotland. What's a girl going to do!Sam (Samantha to her Mum and Dad) has to get creative, really fast. One of her friends suggests that Sam hire a date for the big event. Sounds crazy, for sure. The friend's brother, Jake, is an actor between jobs. What are the chances that this might actually work?Join the fun as this unlikely pair try to carry off this crazy scheme. You'll love the characters in this breezy novel, including Harry the dog.Zara Stoneley has a real flair for her characters and truly brings them to life. Her writing style is fun and breezy, yet still touches on many of our own questions about our self-image and future. I really enjoyed it and will definitely read more of her books. Try it!I'm an Amazon customer.

I ordered this book because I wanted a quick, fun read and someone had compared this to Brigette Jones. Well, this is not in the same league. Silly, boring, and poorly written.

Yes, this is close to the worst book I have ever read. The story was weak. It was too wordy as If a 14 yr old wrote it, over explaining and over describing. I thought it was not good and then I got to the part talking about Prince Harry or his lookalike and his girlfriend, Meghan. Then I knew this book had hit rock bottom. I don’t often give bad reviews. I think the author tried and got it published. That’s better than I’ve done. This is an exception. It makes me believe even I have a future as a writer.
