This book's idea of spending each day of Lent relating it to a physical church in Rome was well done and a unique way to experience a Lenten devotion.Up to this point I, like a typical Catholic, would have focused my Lenten devotion on the daily readings, the Stations of the Cross, the Seven Last Words, and so on. This book reminds us that the 'corporate' Church also includes the dimension of pilgrims and martyrs and their legacy in our Lenten journey.The book includes numerous threads of discussion from Pope JP2 and Pope Benedict XVI in the daily meditations on each station church, as well as interesting details on the architecture and history of the sites. It provides a beneficial reminder that the Church as Body of Christ has withstood much in the way of trials over the centuries since Calvary, and that salvation history includes a physical dimension that one can visit, in addition to the Word and Tradition that we all know and (hopefully) love.There are some color pictures of the sites, but the majority of the shots are monochrome. This is my only disappointment with the book. I assume that to publish the work using all color pictures would have driven the cost up too much.All in all, a very good conservative, orthodox book for those Catholics wanting a structured and unique way to live their Lenten devotion.

I appreciate this book. I bought it last fall before my son and I took a trip to Rome but, having no context with which to appreciate it, set it aside. We took our pilgrimage to Rome during Advent of last year, visiting as many churches as we were able in our all too short 8 days in Rome. Now, having a context after having visiting many of the Station Churches, I am following this pilgrimage through Lent. I appreciate this book (is there another like it?) to follow all the Station Churches through Lent. I do hope someday I can return to Rome to make this pilgrimage in person, but, for this Lent, I am very, very thankful for this beautiful guide.

I thought this book would be a keeper…it has been put together in sections w/colored photo inserts. Three ofthese have been glued to previous written page & cannot be opened without tearing page; the last section ofwritten pages is p. 308; then 2 pages of colored photos; the section from that page to the end of the book hasbroken away from binding. I have never received a book from Amazon in this condition. I will not go throughthe hassle of returning this book, and will never again purchase books published by Basic Books/Perseus Group.I coordinate a small faith group at church, many of whom are Amazon customers; we were considering its usethis coming Lenten season. I realize this is not Amazon's fault; just thought you should know the poor qualityof book. mb

I've been to Rome and missed so many gems in these churches because the guide books just cannot tell the story and meaning behind the gems of these stational churches.

I used this book as a Lenten retreat along with the daily Mass readings and the Office of readings from the Liturgy of the Hours. Fantastic. George weighed really brings together all of the daily readings to help understand the Lenten journey to Easter. I Nevsr really looked at the stories of Moses thru the resurrection text as a complete whole. What a meaningful and fulfilling aid to retreat. Highly recommended.

This is one of those rare books that you look forward all day to reading in the evening, and when you're getting close to the finish, you wish it had at least twice as many pages. Fortunately, there are two more excellent entries in this trilogy, and each of those is just as good as the first. If you love Norse mythology and are fond of marauding Northmen, trolls, goblins, elves, and dragons, then these books are a particular treat. This is not kid stuff, however—there are occasional strong scenes of violence and killing (especially in the first book), and while they're not so graphic as to earn the trilogy a PG-13 rating, the intended audience is clearly young adults and up.As evidenced by the bibliography at the end of the book, the author thoroughly researched the period and setting. Consequently, she is able to immerse the reader in a vibrant world rich in authentic details and populated with an abundance of fascinating characters full of charm, eccentricities, flaws, and quirks. While you'll definitely come to love or hate some of these people more than others, the philosophical undercurrent woven into the tale never presents any of them—or their actions—as simply good or evil. A valuable lesson to learn, or be reminded of, for young and older adults alike.

I am a lover of Norse Myths. I know them by heart, own several books on them and read everything that has anything to do with them. I've read other "young adult" books from (possibly) more popular authors which are based on Norse mythology and the Vikings (Northmen) but they were disappointing at the best. This story, however, is amazing. The tie ins to culture, beliefs and history are fantastic but the use of the Norse myths and how they work into the fabric of the story is really well done. Unless you're a scholar of the Norse beliefs and stories you're sure to learn something from the book, and if you ARE a scholar - even amateur - you're going to just love the book. Simple as that.

This is a great series--my son and I both really enjoyed it. A good story and a very good sense of the historical world the characters live in, but the best part about it is the complicated relationships: the hero loves his sister even though she never really stops being a brat, he becomes close to the Vikings and appreciates their good qualities even though he knows they're still violent and can be very cruel. Gives kids a lot to think about as well as a good story.

This was a really good book! My husband and I went for a day trip to Grand Marais, MN and we came across this cute book store called Drury Lane. He found this book for me and I bought it on my Kindle when we got home. It was a fun fantasy story full of adventure and humor and never a dull moment. Jack is called to be The Bard's apprentice, so he is taken under his wing to learn the trade. I laughed just reading the cast of characters, so many great ones and not all human. Pick this one up and give it a try! I am an adult and I enjoyed it very much!

As a middle school language arts teacher, I am always looking for books that boys will enjoy, as they are often more reluctant to read than girls. This story of a young boy captured by berserkers, moves quickly enough to keep boys engaged, but I think has enough fairy tale elements in it to appeal to girls as well.This book may not be suitable for students younger than sixth grade, since the descriptions of Viking raids are quite graphic. The story also invites students to grapple with what is true about life and death, as Jack (the protagonist) was raised as a Christian and must measure what he believes against Viking tales of Valhalla. This is definitely a worthwhile read and is ultimately life affirming.

This enchanting saga, a thrilling amalgam of history and Norse mythology, can be enjoyed equally by middle-graders, teens and adults. It has it all: nonstop adventure, fantasy, vividly portrayed characters, lighthearted moments, humor, and an engaging young protagonist named Jack, a Saxon farm boy and bardic apprentice.After Jack and his younger sister, Lucy, are captured and enslaved by berserker Northmen, we meet such distinctive characters as Olaf One-Brow, the alternately disgusting and likable leader of a crew of berserkers; Rune, a skald, or Norse bard, who can no longer sing; Thorgil, a fierce, bloodthirsty girl whose greatest desire is to become a berserker and die gloriously in battle; a troll queen named Glamdis; and shape-shifting half-trolls. And there are lots of birds and beasts, including a noble crow called Bold Heart, Irish wolfhounds, a troll-boar, Freya's cats, and a mother dragon and her dragonlets.And as if this marvelous story and assortment of fascinating characters weren't enough, there's a wonderful, life-affirming message in this book, nothing heavy-handed, but arising clearly from the story itself: that we should all enjoy life while it lasts and not bemoan the fact that one day we will die. It's stated most clearly by the troll queen (and also by Rune the skald, who learned it from her): "To ignore joy while it lasts, in favor of lamenting one's fate, is a great crime."

The characters are engaging and complete. The story is rich and well defined. Hard to put down or if audio hard to turn off. Not just for kids.

I ordered this book for my 6th grader to do a book report for language class. Normally I select and purchase the books well in advance, but this time I was late. I was surprised and delighted at the speed at which we received the book, and with regular mail at that. We could not have asked for faster delivery. The book was in excellent condition. He thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I couldn't get him to put it down to go to bed. The theme and characters were familiar to him,from his electronic games and from playing World of Warcraft (probably explains why he was so engrossed). Needless to say, he aced the book report. Thank you Amazon for getting the book to us so quickly and for having products at such reasonable prices.

There should be a rule that all babies and toddlers be given this book and have it ready to them regularly. It is encouraging, supportive, loving, and emotional.

I bought this for my 13 year old granddaughter. She struggles to understand herself at times and needed some reassurance. I read this book and thought it would be perfect for her. When I gave it to her, we read it together and she cried and gave me the biggest hug ever! A perfect gift to show that you love and care for that special someone who needs a “it will all be ok and you’re perfect just the way you are!”

What a wonderful book for my little girl. The book follows a little girl as she's told most of life's biggest lesson, ones that many adults never learned. The book is so warmly empowering and lets your little one know that it's okay to be who you are and that you don't only have to be one thing. That advice well given.A lovely book for my little one.

The perfect book for my little granddaughter age 7. This is an age when kids begin noticing their differences and even the positive can feel like a negative to the new girl in school just trying to fit in. She's small for her age and says kids are making fun of her. We can tell her she'll be glad some day, or she will grow, or we're all different, or just revel in the unwanted attention. However it's, nice to have reinforcement to these discussions in print telling her to just be herself and own it!

I like the idea of this book. But the way it’s written and presented isn’t really for kids, my 6 1/2 year old had a hard time following it, I found myself explaining what each page meant. My almost 4 year old, it just didn’t make any sense to her. My kids love books, but this one seems to be more for older ages.

My special little girl will know how special she is, and how unique and how the world is a better place because she is in it. She will know how to leave her mark, and be who she is all the way.....the book fosters all of this and more.... a book to help her succeed and be happy with her success and with herself....LOVE the message.... It includes a carbohydrate sensitivity quiz (created by Dr. Georgia Ede), a discussion about the benefits of carb restriction for cancer and other diseases, Domini's own story, and many delicious whole-food, low-carb recipes. The recipes are arranged by type: Breakfast, Soup, Mains, Vegetables, Dressings and Desserts. There is also a section with several vegetarian entrees that sound delicious.In the second part, "The Ketogenic Way," Patricia shares her own story and expertise about the ketogenic diet, including detailed helpful hints for getting the best results from this way of eating. She also has a fantastic section entitled "Myth-busting FAQs" in which she addresses common concerns about the ketogenic diet in an evidence-based way that is also very easy to understand, along with its potential benefits as a cancer therapy to be used in conjunction with conventional treatment.The Meal Plans and RecipesThe first thing you'll probably notice when you look through this book are the exquisitely photographed recipes. I was also happy to see that each recipe's nutrition analysis includes the macronutrient composition percentages.While there are several recipes in "The Low Carb Way" that have carb counts too high for a ketogenic diet, there are also many with 6 grams of digestible carb or less per serving, which can easily fit into a keto lifestyle. Here are just a few examples:Eggs "Benedict" (4.4 grams net carb)​Chicken, Cashew and Broccoli Stir Fry (3.7 grams net carb)Ridiculously Tasty Prawns (1.1 grams net carb)As someone who favors gradually easing into carbohydrate restriction rather than going from a very high carb intake to one that is very low, I was happy to see that Patricia takes the same approach in "The Ketogenic Way." Her meal plans start with about 50 grams of digestible ("net") carb per day and progressively reduce daily carb intake to 12 grams over the course of 2 weeks.Patricia's menu plans take the guesswork out of how many carbs to consume each day for your daily goal. In addition, she has organized this section so that the recipes for each day's meal plan are right on the same or the following page. I love that she encourages the reader to make extra portions of meat and vegetables to use as leftovers for the next day's recipes, which helps minimize the amount of time needed for meal planning and preparation. Patricia provides a lot of helpful information throughout these chapters, including easy and effective ways to include probiotics in your diet; identifying food sensitivities and adjusting your keto diet as needed; the benefits of sea vegetables, coconut oil and organ meats; and much more.I also appreciate the emphasis placed on the healing qualities of foods in addition to their macronutrient composition. Herbs and spices are used liberally in the recipes, both for their antioxidant benefits as well as adding flavor and texture to the dishes. Nourishing bone broth and meat and vegetable stocks are the base for many of her entrees and sides.In all honesty, I can't think of anything negative to say about The Ketogenic Kitchen.I believe you will truly enjoy this book and the recipes. What's more, I think your health -- and the health of your loved ones -- will be greatly enhanced by incorporating its nutrition principles into your life, whether you have cancer or are interested in protecting your health and improving your quality of life. ​

70 % of my calories come from good fat. (coconut oil, MCT OIL) I eat less than 20 grams per day from carbs. Moderate protein 75 grams per day. Cancer cells grow on glucose and do not grow on good fats. My cancer has been in remission since 2012. Insulin spikes from eating grains which makes you hungry in three hours. Don't do that! Eat fat and make your body go to your fat belly after it runs out of glucose. You can go a month on your fat belly and your butt will thank you. (240 lbs to 175 lbs, FG now 70-85, 80 years old and now weight lifting at L.A. Fitness gym. Also I recommend "Quick & Easy Ketogenic Cooking" by Maria Emmerich.

Beautifully designed book, filled with many great recipes to get one started on a ketogenic life style. Highly recommended for those looking to Kickstart a healthy life.

This is a great recipe book except for one BIG thing--the measurements are in grams instead of teaspoons and cups! I have to read a conversion chart which does not translate exactly into my measuring instruments. So I have to guess and try to get it as close as possible. It is an annoying extra step. Please re-write the book in American measurements!

I love this cookbook! It's full of glorious recipes and crammed with helpful information. I wanted it so much I ordered it before it was being sold here in the U.S. and waited impatiently for it to make its way to me. It was worth the money and the wait.

Good book but all the measurements are metric which makes the recipes useless unless you take the time to convert each and every ingredient. Wish I got a U.S. version
