History is... complicated. A bunch of cheeky monkeys running around the world trying to shove their opinions down each other's throats. Larry sees the ironies in the human condition and doesn't let them get away with it. Part Will and Ariel Durant, part Gilbert Shelton (Furry Freak Brothers comics), he digests the impossibly complex and spits it into your lap in a far more digestible form than this twisted metaphor has any right to invoke in you. Got that? I sincerely believe that anybody who reads this series and does not accumulate a better perspective on humanity is sick. And if this review caused a chuckle, wait till you read his stuff.

I remember a description of memory tests that showed how people remember subject material better if it's presented with humor or with a cartoon. That summarizes how I feel about the Cartoon History series by Larry Gonick.I've always loved reading ancient history, archeology, and paleontology. However, I've hardly ever liked or remembered much Dark Ages history. It never caught my attention. Larry Gonick, however, succeeds in making the Dark Ages humorous and memorable, right down to the politics between Catholic popes and European kings.Even better, he begins the book with a great summary of the Inca and Maya civilizations, which contained quite a lot I didn't know. This is wonderfully entertaining and instructive.

If I could, I would give this 15 stars: 5 stars as a history book, 5 stars as an art book, and 5 stars as a comic/humor book.I only wish that the page format was as large as the original books in this series, and I wish they had more resolution when digitizing the drawings.But that is all okay! There is the same amount of enjoyable material between the covers, and you wouldn't even notice the digital effect unless you squint to look for it (and now you will. Heehee, sorry).Same goes for Modern World Part II. His scathing treatment of George W. Bush at the end is priceless!Get these books now!

Larry Gonick is a genius. He's taken subjects normally avoided by most laypersons (history, genetics, computers, etc.) and made them entirely entertaining. And the best part is he doesn't skimp on the research... just check out the bibliography. You can quote him as easily as you can any boring old textbook."The Cartoon History of the Modern World, Part I" continues where "The Cartoon History of the Universe, Part III" left off. We get a fresh look at the 'discovery' of the new world and all the political ramifications it had in Europe and the rest of the old world. While these books don't go into great detail about specific events, there is enough there to whet one's appetite to seek out more information and pique one's curiousity about how things came to be the way they are today. I can't remcommend any of Mr. Gonick's books enough.

Larry Gonick always makes history interesting, approachable, and funny. This series is a great way to gain familiarity with history so that it isnt so hard to learn more.

Having enjoyed the first three in the series, I had to see how Gonick would handle modern history. First, the cartoon framework, with its jokes and simplified (but not simplistic) explanations, helped me to stay engaged through the entire book. Second, actually seeing drawings of the kings and popes, scholars and artists helped me to remember who did what when. Finally, the sources that Gonick relies on seem to be pretty disparate in their viewpoints, and he relies on a number of cross-referenced academic fields, like macroeconomics, human consciousness, anthropology, and geography to help him explain national narratives. Unfortunately, Africa and Asia get short shrift in this edition, and the cartoons are getting denser as the series progresses. Overall, I'd say that if you like history outside of history class, then you should add this book to your collection.

As always, Mr. Gonick does an excellent job of presenting history in an informative and interesting way. I enjoyed the book immensely, with the disclaimer that it is not a substitute for studying a subject in more detail. The author covers a very large period of history in one book and thus can't give some subjects the scrutiny that they deserve. Also on occasion I have found some details that are not quite correct (which is true of even more scholarly works I've read). Being a avid student of history, his books help fill in some of the gaps in areas in which I have almost no knowledge and on more than one occasion have spark an interest in me to investigate further. Overall, I have bought all Mr. Gonick's books on history and will continue to do so. I recommend them to any reader who wants to get their history in a very readable format.

This was certainly different in urban fantasy that I'm used to; also known as my first dragon book. I certainly like the idea of Aspen being an adrenaline junky, and that having to do with her obsession with dragons. I, however, cannot fathom why anyone would find dragons creepy or disgusting; sadly dragons don't exist. Anyway, we follow Sid and Aspen on his journey of wooing her. I found their romance a little too easy and Aspen's reaction to Tori didn't seem like it mattered at all. There was predictability with the villain and the ending of the book, which is a cliffhanger. I see the next one is about to be released in the next few weeks, but I am uncertain if I will follow the story any further. Over all, this is a solid 3.5 star book and is a quick, easy read. The story isn't so bad, but I don't feel like it's been fleshed out enough for me to give it a higher rating.

Obsidian has been putting off his mandatory time spent in his human form, but when he is chosen to be the next king of the dragons, his time is up. He becomes “Sid” and must accomplish many tasks expecting to take 10 years, including becoming a high school student. While enrolled in school, Sid meets a fascinating girl named Aspen who is the only person he has met who loves dragons, instead of the fear most feel. Aspen wants nothing to do with Sid, who causes her anxiety and brings back painful memories, instead she just wants to take pictures of dragons and do her own thing. The two of them are thrown together by a fate neither could predict.The book is really short, at only 120ish pages as per my ereader, and I was instantly surprised by how in-depth the world is that the author created right at the get-go. Based on the complexity, I knew that this few amount of pages could not contain everything that I felt could possibly happen and that I was reading the first in a new series that deals with Dragons set in an altered USA.I liked the background world the author gave me, with dragons as an accepted part of the ecosystem and National Parks are where they live and can be seen. Also, the dragon hierarchy was complex, with color changing bodies, fire breathing and magical skills based on type of dragon, mating and living among the humans so that they can understand them better. I liked that the humans had no idea as to what the dragons were up to, or that they had human forms.I think I liked Sid better as a dragon than a person when he was first introduced. I was a little put out by Sid having this intense long term relationship with his dragon-almost-mate Skye, and then within a month being interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with Aspen. Not only did Aspen tell him she was not even a little bit interested, but the fact he got over his “deep” feelings so quickly was surprising. He came off super strong in a stalker kind of way and I found it a turn off. For someone who can read other's emotions, he sure didn't seem to pick up on her dislike of him. Why not try and be her friend, and be happy with that? Nope, it has to be romance or nothing. Also, he fell kind of flat as a person for the first half of the story or so , but that is just in my opinion. He definitely became a more well rounded character once he started dating Aspen, but maybe that was the author's point, to make him more human as he has these experiences and feelings.Aspen was kind of an odd duck. She hated school and could care less if she graduated, felt little sympathy for her twin brother who suffered from anxiety, lived like her parents were her roommates, kind of pretty much disregarded every rule and gave no cares to other's feelings. With both characters, it felt like their emotions were one dimensional and that they overall lacked depth, so it was hard to get invested in them at the start of the book. Also, I have no idea why Aspen was friends with Tori, who was a total tool, by stealing her stuff and changing her physical appearance to become Aspen. Can you say creepy? I wanted to warn Aspen to watch her back before Tori took over her life and disposed of her body. The situation with Marc was really terrible and I felt bad for her, but it did raise a few questions with me. Oh and when did it become ok to give your child anxiety medication laced ice cream? That one caught me off guard, yet it was casually referenced like everyone does it.I hard a hard time getting into the book when I started, but by the middle, I flew through the pages. I feel bad saying negative things about the characters but I have to like the characters to really enjoy a story, so they were a hindrance to me enjoying the book when I first picked it up. Both characters became more fleshed out as the book progressed and I became more interested in the story the further I went. I think the world the author created was great and detailed with tons of potential and I look forward to what she will create next.

I LOVED it. It was like nothing I've read. The characters were well developed and the plot was good and seemed original. God! I just want to read the next book!!!!!!!*SPOILERS*And the ending!!! Omg. I mean, what will save Aspen? How will she get out of that situation? My theories: 1. She'll shout out to Obsidian, discovering some power she never had, and he'll hear her and save her. 2. Realizing her situation, she'll refuse to die, and this fury will fuel a change in her, this refusal to die without a fight... and she'll become a Dragon. That would be cool :) I mean, who knows what kind of ancestry she has? Especially since she attracted the attentions of the dragon king. I mean, Obsidian will be just in time to see the change. Maybe her link to Obsidian and the mysterious extra words in her tattoo created a rare link between her and Sid, allowing her to somehow become a Dragon herself. If this happens she might even get to be experience the Dragon queen trials at some point!! ... I mean this outcome would save them both from death. 3. (Worst outcome, might stop reading the book if it goes this way) Aspen dies, leaving Sid to mourn forever or somehow moving on and shifting the main characters. God, I would hate it if this happens. I want her to be saved, I don't want a martyr. It would be a senseless death. And I really like Sid and Aspen. Don't ruin their eternal love.I kinda hope I'm wrong with my predictions and that Loth finds some other kick-ass way for Aspen to survive, because I'd be half disappointed if I guessed completely right :)

Romance and intrigue come together to make an adventure set in the modern Yellowstone National Park. While the author struggles with creating believable dialogue, the characters still have believable experiences and reactions. Readers are aware of the duality of Obsidian/Sid from the beginning, which makes for some interesting dramatic irony.Trigger warnings: The romance is disturbing at times, as the male half of the relationship--who is over 500 years old, a near-immortal dragon--continues pursuing a 17-year-old human girl even after she has clearly expressed that she is not interested. This (technically) pedophilic relationship involves stalking, lying, and even physical harassment when he does things like break her possessions or tug her hair while they sit in class. He isolates her from her friends by kissing her publicly, causing her best friend to end their long friendship. The girl also has several flashbacks to being raped several years before by another man--who is eventually brought to justice. I feel the trauma induced by the assault is handled fairly well and respectfully, but some readers may find it triggering.

Ends on a cliffhanger... really? Just as things were getting interesting. The storyline was new, fresh, and interesting. But poor execution cause it to be slow and hard to read. I don’t think I will be reading the rest of the series.

The way that the Sidemen wrote this book is exactly like how they collaborate in a Sidemen video, which is really funny, and that's why I'm such a big fan of them. I'm really impressed by the way they present their contents, using the 'Sidemen way'.

I started watching the sidemen on YouTube recently this year and have loved their videos since. I heard that came out with a book about them and how their careers began and what not. I almost didn't get it out of fear that I wouldn't finish the book. I finally went for it and bought it on the kindle version, and finished it within a matter of days. I absolutely loved their book and think they did an amazing job on it. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.

Meh. The book has it's funny moments, but the text is all over the place in an attempt to be fun. I don't really like this format that much because it makes it harder to read. I bought the book because I thought it would be about the sidemen outside of You Tube. It kinda is, but there is a large section of the book dedicated to FIFA. I don't mind watching the FIFA videos as much as I mind reading about them.

It was completely entertaining. Loved every minute of it, and the pictures really push it over the top for me.

Bought this book for my 12 year old daughter. So nice to see her read and not have her face in an Ipad all day. She hasn't stopped thanking me for buying her this book.

Greate book it is an easy read. I finished it in about 3 days. I love the sidemen so i had to get it the pictures their personal bios the funny add ons everything is done perfect it kept me intrigued and entertained throught the whole thing. Great job!!!

A nice compendium of 56 "camp ground" songs, hymns and spirituals from the late 19th Century. Tunes include those still fairly well known ("Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "An Unclouded Day"; "The Church in the Wildwood" [aka "The Little Brown Church in the Vale"]), and those nearly forgotten ("Methodist Pie," "Give Me the Roses Now"). Useful if only for the tunes, not to mention the religious and folkloric value. Paperback.

Not very pleased with this product, but it's my fault for not noticing the dimensions (it's the size of a pew hymnal, but the music font is light and small). Also the description points out that the songs are melody-only (vocal) plus basic guitar chords. Not suitable for a pianist. Friends, you do get what you pay for.

I love the "Fake Book" arrangements for these old, beloved hymns! I am just a beginning keyboard learner but I can play most of these songs. And I can't find many of them anywhere else. If you like the really old-time hymns, you will probably love this book.

To travel back in time to an interesting period in history : when camp meetings were still pure and uplifting !! On the one hand this booklet is good to have as a treasure from old times on the other hand it provides the information - very clearly - based on which you yourself can relive those old times. I really treasuere this book and its contents and is more than recommendable !!!

Received quickly in really good condition. Cute little book with easy to play melodies/hymns. Some old familiar friends and a few new ones too. I like the 'back story' about the publication dates and recordings of each song. Nice added extra history.

Good old hymns everybody ought to love and sing again in church and at home.

The content was good, and my elderly mother enjoyed it greatly. The book would be much easier to read if it were a bit larger and text was spread out more and clearer; however, I would still recommend the book for the content.
