“Novel Destinations by Shannon McKenna Schmidt and Joni Rendon is a journey in itself and a compendium of literary spots for the book lover in all of us. Indulge by reading about one favorite author and all the places or dip in and out to learn something new about your authors or nearby literary spots.”—Savy Verse & Wit Blog“…This second edition of Novel Destinations helps people like me...people who ache to return to the haunting Gothic South that they've never physically been to, the cathedrals of Paris that only exist in their mind's eye, and the rowdy Burns Night Supper that lingers on their tongue...revisit and relive these experiences even when the cover is closed. Divided into two parts, Novel Destinations offers more than a guidebook could ever dream to.” —All Roads Lead to the Kitchen Blog   “Novel Destinations is very diverse in its subject matter, depending on your interest.  It not only lists literary walks and tours but also hotels where famous literary authors stayed (and you can, too!).   There’s something for everyone, including various thrills for mystery readers.  I definitely plan on using Novel Destinations as a travel guide the next time I’m looking for inspiration.” —The Cactus Chronicles Blog   “If you love to read and to travel (and to read while you travel!) you will feel as though the authors of Novel Destinations wrote their informative and delightful book just for you. Great gift for a voracious reader who likes to travel.

I am having so much fun with this book! I purchased 2 more copies as gifts for the Readers/Travelers in my life

Fast delivery, fun book.

A well written and engaging read.

This book offers an opportunity to visit and learn about literary giants like Ernst Hemingway, Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and others. This is a great guide for bibliophiles and readers interested in literature to numerous literary sites in United States and Europe. It also provides information about literary festivals, and places to go for a drink, to dine and lodge. Big Apple bars, Parisian cafes, literary pubs in England, and Ernst Hemingway’s watery holes in United States and Cuba.Take a stroll around museums dedicated to work of these authors, the homes, neighborhoods, galleries, and the restaurants they hung out, and the towns and cities they lived in. Franz Kafka's Prague, James Joyce's Dublin, Louisa May Alcott's Massachusetts and Papa Hemingway’s favorite place in Sun Valley, Idaho or Havana, Cuba. Some of the highlights include; Harper Lee’s old Court House Museum surrounded by landscapes of cotton fields, red clay roads, rolling hills tucked into rural pockets of Monroeville, Alabama. Tony’s Saloon in Key West, Florida, which is the original location of Sloppy Joe’s where Hemingway spent much time during his stay in Key West. The 17th century seaside manse in Salem, Massachusetts, which was the inspiration of Nathanial Hawthorne’s “The House of Seven Gables.” The home of Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House in Concord, Massachusetts that was the setting for her novel, “Little Women.” Charles Dickens museum in London, and fragments of Marshalsea debtor’s prison where Dickens was incarcerated. The book also has numerous photographs, but they are small and hard to appreciate. This book is recommended to readers interested in travelling to places of literary significance.

This book is definitely focused on the States and Europe, with an eye towards the canon: Shakespeare, Jane Austin, Hemingway, Victor Hugo, Harper Lee, Dickens, Twain, and Edith Wharton. I really enjoyed the structure of the book, starting up front with the "official" author homes and museums, and then working outward to less obvious destinations inspired by the authors and their works. Just looking at one example that I especially liked, Mark Twain's section entitled an Innocent Abroad. It features a nice listing of some hotels you could stay at that Twain stayed during his travels, also birthplace, childhood home, gravesite, noted locations in Hawaii written about by Twain, and a couple of places he stayed in Europe. The limitations of this book are also evident though. I am a huge fan of Twain's A Tramp Abroad, and think of it whenever I'm in Heidelberg, a town not featured at all in this book. In fact Germany only has a mention of Goethe's home. Maybe for volumes two or three...

Love, love, love Novel Destinations. Have been using it on my (admittedly somewhat rare but still, occasional) travels and have had such fun tracking down these places. Recently traveled to Santa Fe to visit family, and went to The Inn of the Turquoise Bear (pg. 178). IT WAS SO COOL.This is the first book I have ever owned in my life upon which I used a highliter! The book is gorgeous! My one big, "Why isn't it in here?" is the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Cross Creek State Park...so my suspicion is that some others' faves may be missing as well. Despite that, I still think this book rocks!

An interesting collection of literary "destinations": places worth visiting that were frequented by famous authors or are mentioned in their books. It's fun to browse through these, and to get ideas for possible trips. The book doesn't aim for completeness: it seems to reflect the idiosyncracies of the writer's literary tastes. Hemingway, for example, gets a lot of attention with numerous places mentioned, but there's nothing about Lovecraft's Providence. Victor Hugo gets lots of space (deservedly so), but Proust hardly gets any, except in catalogs of hotels and cafes visited by him (along with many other writers). Illiers-Combray isn't even mentioned. Tsk! And the book confines itself to places in America and modern Europe. There's nothing about Homer's world, for example. And it might have been good to see material on places that are important in non-Western literature, such as Kurukshetra.

This is a lovely historical pictorial of East Meadow. So many people of our acquaintance are in this book - especially our dearest friend, Ernie Hatzelman, pictured on the cover. Ernie became the owner of The Meadow Dairy and everyone knew how great a deli that was. They made the best and largest sandwiches ever. You could make two from the one. If you come from the East Meadow area this is a must.read book.

Comprehensive and interesting book that was well-researched and a labor of love on the part of the author. Loaded with vintage photos and filled with facts about the history of the town. I love it!

Great history of the town on LI where I was raised.

I gave the book as a present to a friend who was delighted to learn about her town. She loved taking a walk down memory lane!

The archival photos and backstory of East Meadow was a joy to behold. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to revisit the past and learn a thing or two about East Meadow.

Having grown up in East Meadow, this book provided some interesting insights as to what life what like there before the post-WWII housing shortage that resulted in its suburbanization.

Great Book, hope there will be another edition.

HUGE HIT! Great if you grew up in East Meadow

There is something about this book that draws you in even though most of the characters are self-centered and malicious and you tend not to like them. The current of love, lust, and possession runs throughout the story which is told to the new renter of "The Grange" by the housekeeper of Wuthering Heights. As she sits and knits she spins the tale of the tempestuous love story of Cathy and Heathcliff, slowly but surely you are pulled in to all the machinations that the Lintons and Earnshaws and the orphan Heathcliff engage in across the cold, damp, windswept moors of the Yorkshire estate. Your mind becomes filled with Heathcliff, always Heathcliff, watching planning and deeply in love with Cathy. The story follows their lives through two generations. As a reader, I have to wonder what state of mind Emily Bronte was in when she wrote the turbulent tale. Published in 1847 the story was considered lurid and shocking, but a masterpiece. It is Bronte's only novel and is as relevant today as it was back then. Emily Bronte had been ill for some time and died in December of 1848.

A timeless classic. I read this book a long time ago and decided to read it again. Enjoyed it even more as a more mature women. :-) It's a sad story that makes you feel sorry for many of the characters but it's a good escape back to a time and place so different from where we are now.

I enjoyed the book. I was surprised how our modern-day language has, apparently, been dumbed down over the years. I'm college-educated, but found many words she used to be ones I had never heard. That said, I still enjoyed the book. I probably should have read it years ago in some English class, but it was never required. I took my time with no looming deadlines and enjoyed it.

There are two reviews here, since this special version of the book has two things going on. When I was a kid I had some weird built-in prejudice against anything labeled "classic". Unknowingly I read "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" and even Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar," but I thought I had "discovered" them--had anyone told me they were classics, I wouldn't have read them. Stupid, but true. When I was in my thirties I read "A Tale of Two Cities" and re-thought my whole position on the classics--maybe there was a reason they were called that. So I read a lot of them, but I never read "Jane Eyre." I saw about four different movie versions of it, though, and figured I knew the story well enough. But when Writer's Digest announced this version, I saw a chance to correct an omission AND get some good writing advice. KM Weiland's book on structure, after all, is a masterpiece. Hence, this double-edged review.1. Jane Eyre. The movie versions I've seen were, surprisingly, fairly true to the book (not often the case, as anyone who reads a book and then watches its movie knows). Shy governess, obnoxious-but-philosophical middle aged guy. Crazy wife in the attic. Missionaries. They hit all the high points. But Bronte's prose is well-done, and her characters are far more complex than the movies. She has a great way of building suspense, too. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I wanted to see it happen, so I kept reading. And I was satisfied when I closed the book: a good story, well-told.2. The notes. Weiland's notes are, at the risk of sounding sycophantic, brilliant. Remember, these notes are about the writing of the book, not about the historicity or any of the other kinds of analysis you'd usually see in annotations. (My annotated "Sense and Sensibility" practically explains each curtsy as well as why dances lasted half an hour.) There's plenty of analysis, but it's all about how Bronte tells the story. For readers of Weiland's "Structuring Your Novel," it's like a Part II, showing the First Plot Point, (p118), Midpoint (p216), Third Plot Point (p325), Resolution and Epilogue. There are even pages at the back with questions (and lines for answering them or writing other notes) about structure. But wait, there's more! There are notes on perspective, voice, POV, conflict and tension, obstacles, character development, transitions, and way more than that. (I'm laundry listing here--but trust me, the notes could practically be their own book.)I'm a writer myself, though you won't see my name in Amazon in that capacity--I ghost write. Under my own name, I'm also a freelance editor (developmental, substantive, and copy--you name it, I do it) and have been one for years. But I still read books on writing all the time. Some I love, some I tolerate, and a few I've ridiculed (after jumping up and down on their tattered remains). But this book is its own category, or perhaps it defies category. It's a writing master class, analyzing a masterpiece of English literature to make its key points. If I were a writing teacher, this would be required reading for my classroom. One thing alone keeps the book from getting the fifth star, and it's a mechanical thing, nothing against Bronte or Weiland. They did their jobs well! But the typeface for the story is a serif font, and it's ten points at most, maybe eight. I needed to buy a +2 set of "cheaters" to read the story alone--and the notes are worse. They're a pale blue sans serif (the contrasting serif/sans serif fonts are good; the size is not and the pale color is not) that was hard to read even with the +2 cheaters. The notes are in the outer margins and take up about a third (one column) of each page. I wish they'd gone for broke and instead of giving us a six-by-nine (I'm eyeballing it, so the measurements are probably not exact), gone up a couple of sizes, just for the sake of those of us who are over 40. Then maybe they could've made the print a decent size.

Read the description. This is an 8.5 × 11 monstrosity that is masquerading as a "paperback". Ridiculous. I mean, sure, shame on me for not reading a description, but when most people say paperback, they don't mean a students textbook. Sheesh.

This old classic is a classic for a reason. IF I read it in high school I don't remember it. So I enjoyed a delightful read over several days, savouring the descriptions, enjoying the character development as well as the plot. At first I thought it was a children's book, but after reading it, I think the children of today would have a hard time understanding many of the beautiful uses of the English language that Charlotte Bronte perfected.

I recommend this to anyone who wants to understand their own bouts of depression and melancholy.

Despair and depression are I guess , the mood of most people at one time or another of their lives. For some people however it is the dominant note, the prevailing feeling and totally takes over their lives. Why this happens and to whom exactly it happens whole Literatures, including my guess is the psychiatric and neuroscience literatures can give only partial answers to. However ' despair ' becomes especially problematic and interesting when it happens in the lives of those who are our spiritual models , and who in the Hasidic tradition are to continually be clinging to and uplifted by the Presence of God.How explain the fall and the darkness?Elie Wiesel tells the individual story of four great Hasidic masters and their particular struggles with their own inner darkness. My only Holy Teacher the late Dovid Hertzberg who loved these Hasidic masters with all his soul, and taught their Torahs with such love and inspiration once suggested ( And this is not his suggestion alone) that the great Kotzker went into his ten year period of isolation and solitude because the sufferings of his own Hasidim ( It was his task to listen to them and help them) became so great that they overwhelmed him completely i.e. The despair was not a private despair of an individual for himself but a despair which came out of his love of his own Hasidim and people. Perhaps, even a holy despair.

a classic!!

I have tried several Instant Pot cookbooks and I have found this one to have the most full-proof recipes. In the first pages the author, Rachel Collins, tells you how to use your Instant Pot, whether using the pre-programmed or manual settings. She also has a section on how to convert recipes for the Instant Pot. This book is extremely thorough and has recipes for the pantry which I find very useful. For example, did you know that you can make yogurt with your IP? I never knew that! There are recipes for mayo, broths, applesauce, caramelized onions. There are separate chapters for breakfast, beans and grains, soups and chilis, poultry, beef and pork, vegetables and side dishes, pantry, and desserts. There’s also a really good recipe for Honey Tumeric Tonic which is great if you have the cold or the flu. I like how this book has very nutritious and healthy recipes along with several different ethnic foods such as borracho beans, Korean braised beef short ribs, Jamaican-style Rice and beans, Chana Masala, and Indian Inspired Okra and Cauliflower with Cucumber Yogurt Sauce. This is my “go to” Instant Pot cookbook for sure! I have really enjoyed making several of these recipes. The recipes are easy to follow and the author details everything you need to know for your IP for each recipe. So while I’m relatively new at using my IP, I have found her recipes easy to follow and understand. Tonight I’m going to make the chicken and dumplings soup! I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars! There are recipes sure to please every appetite in this book, from down-south comfort food recipes to unique ethnic ones! Get more information about this book here.

I was gifted an instant pot for my birthday immediately started looking for a cookbook to help me use it. I sat in Barnes and Noble for over an hour, looking through various pressure cooker and Instapot cookbooks (my pressure cooker is Farberware if that matters). Reading through the recipes I felt disappointed at the lack of family friendly dishes that would please kids and adults that didn’t require a ton of specialty ingredients. I want food with flavor but I also need bang for my buck - much as I would like to we can’t afford to live on Korean barbecue short ribs or cassoulet with duck confit. Which brings me to This Amazing instapot Cookbook by Rachel Collins, a cookbook that has exactly what I was looking for but only found bits and pieces of elsewhere. I didn’t know Ms. Collins had a blog until after I bought the book because I never bothered to read the back cover - to me the recipes tell the tale and that’s what I looked at first. There is also a great introduction on how to use your instapot pressure cooker which was very useful to me as a newbie. So far I have made the Hearty Beef and Barley Soup (there are 100+ different soup/stew/chowder recipes in the book) which was wonderful. We have also eaten Bean with Bacon soup, Thai Chicken Thighs, Smokey Baked Beans, Shredded Barbecue Chicken and the Italian Sausage and Spinach Risotto and they have all gotten rave reviews!!!This cookbook is organized into logical chapters that are easy to follow and an index that organizes food under type so if you want to find all the recipes with pork, chocolate or potato just look under those headings. There are a wide variety of dishes with a lot of flavor that won’t break the bank or your sanity because the instructions are very thorough. I love this cookbook, it’s exactly what I needed and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a pressure cooker cookbook for flavorful dishes you can make for everyday meals.

I've been really getting into my IP LUX-60 as of late and found this awesome little cookbook to take my understanding and proficiency of it even further. I love the find feature, ability to quickly see bookmarks, highlights, and notes, free up space on the bookshelf, and many things are hyperlinked where you can go to other parts of the cookbook by clicking them (for instance, a sauce in the recipe ingredients list is hyperlinked and clicking it will take you to how to make the sauce in a different section). The author presents recipes in a logical manner, easy to read, with summary sections, section headers, steps 1-X, and helpful tips surrounding certain steps. Reading just the intro of the book you can tell that she is an expert with the Instant Pot. She dispels lots of misconceptions that you might have heard from others based on her empirical evidence to the contrary (like never quick releasing pressure of meats because it will dry it out - apparently this is not true / never cooking oatmeal in the PC - you can, etc.). She provides great info on buying decisions for a second or third cooker as well as accessories one might want to consider. She describes the differences between Instant Pot versions, describes the settings in detail, and goes into discussion on various cooking principles, like with meats. You may need to connect the dots in recipes in some cases (for instance, a beans recipe called for 1 quart of water in the ingredient list, mentioned soaking the beans overnight, but didn't specifically state to use the 1 quart of water for soaking the beans) but for the most part the recipes are straight forward. In addition, the recipes aren't overly complicated like I've seen in other PC cookbooks. She covers staple recipes like making stock or hard boiling an egg, covers meals, sides, desserts, all in logical chapters. I will be referring to this cookbook exclusively for some time.

#337,001 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This picture book, with minimal text -- none of which captions, footnotes, or cites the author's pictures -- is a warped indictment of the American college fraternity system by one of its many and growing faculty detractors. What these faculty detractors fail to understand and articulate is that for all the "bad" (and there's some of it in many fraternities), no other institution on American college life is more effective in developing the necessary communication and leadership skills necessary for newly minted college grads to transfer the general skills and technical knowledge they acquire in academia through better bedside manners, organization team leadership, networking, etc. when they are plunged into the real world.

A gorgeous and ironic art object. This powerful book is a key, unlocking how we got to this point in American history and culture. The list of powerful men who run our country, along with their fraternal affiliations, added a jaw-dropping layer to this book of powerful photographs depicting the dark underbelly of fraternity life. The essay by Cynthia Robinson was incredible. I see this book has gotten some attention, but everyone should be talking about this inspired project.

The juxtaposition of contemporary photos against decades-old texts of self-documented rituals for an exclusive youth culture (encouraged and managed by adults), that somehow continues to exist in 2018, is astounding. Combined with the leather binding, it's a true mass-produced art piece; and I wish more books were produced with this attention to visceral detail. Counter to the above reviewer's comments, all requisite attributions are properly included in the book's colophon.Only a true documentarian with both respect and a critical eye on their subjects, can capture a culture in this detail. The most privileged in all of American society, as Diane Arbus may have captured them. The emphasis is correctly placed less on the individual kids shown, and more on the systemic rituals captured in the reproduced texts (intentionally hidden from public view, until a fraternity house had gone abandoned and the photographer discovered them amidst its rubble); a beautiful cause/effect juxtaposition. Having grown-up in a college town and known this culture for years, I find this to be an important critical work in the cannon of American culture whose time is long overdue.
