The "Reading Level" for this book is listed as Young Adult, but the content, style and level of complexity should not be thought of as aimed at or restricted to teens. This is an outstanding and thoroughly engaging book, carefully thought out and written. If you have an interest in early man - or even if you don't -, you will enjoy it. I am far from being a teen, but I have re-read it several times for pure pleasure.

The Kin is a fabulous book for those who wish to better understand prehistory. It follows a group of four children who separate from their Kin because food has run out. They travel to find others. Not only a coming-of-age narrative, but a great insight on how early people lived. The chapters are interspersed with folk stories about the creation of different animals in a storyteller's mode.

The book held my attention from the first page to the last. I spent many late nights after my homework was finished to get in some reading time. I enjoyed reading the story from the perspective of different memebers of the group. The story was not predictible and was intriguing. I was left wondering if the people wore clothing, or shoes or slept on furs, so some information was left to the imagination. It was a volumous book but a very good read.

I really enjoyed this book. It was intriguing! Lots of action and emotion.

I used this book in my class to enhance our studies of the Neolithic age. The kids really enjoy it and it has helped them understand how the early people needed to move around and the difficulties posed in doing so.

GREAT READ

Speculative fantasy set in our distant past, when early humans were walking out of Africa, this brilliant quartet of children's novels (one from the point of view of each of four connected children who are forming a new tribe) takes you into the mind and mythological worldview of primitive proto-people.(In that sense it is like a kids' version of another of my all-time favorite books, The Inheritors by William Golding - a Neanderthal's view of the coming of modern humans.)But The Kin has another layer of brilliance: each of the four novels has a complete mythic tale woven through it, each chapter followed by a page or two of the myth, the two being thematically related and illustrative of the interplay of early human action and early human imagination.A unique work by a wonderful author of a wide range of novels.

After reading a few just so-so books, I really wanted to get lost in a great tome of a story. The Kin was just the ticket. The book is actually four novels published in one volume, weighing in at just over 600 pages. The story is paced really well, so I would look up from reading and realize I had just knocked out 50 or 75 pages in no time. I'm a huge history fan and have always been interested in the history of early mankind. Set in prehistoric Africa, this novel imagines what life was like for the clans of people surviving in the African deserts. The stories of Suth, Noli, Po, and Mana are interspersed with Oldtales, or creation stories about the Kin's First Ones, which I found to be really interesting and illuminating as to how the characters behaved and reacted to life in the wild. Each First One is an animal, such as a monkey or a pocupine, and each Kin is named after a First One. The mixture of myth and history was just perfect and very entertaining.A most interesting aspect of this book is how Dickinson imagined communication between speaking and non-speaking humans. The four children the stories follow belong to the Moonhawk Kin, which consists of highly verbal humans. Along the way, they encounter the Porcupine Kin, who are nonverbal but are still very communicative through sounds and gestures. Some of the Moonhawks say that the Porcupine Kin are not really 'people' because they can't speak words, but others, particularly Noli, are convinced that the Porcupine are just as human as anyone else even though they are different. All in all, this novel is a very interesting and thought-provoking work of 'prehistorical' fiction.

I GMed Pathfinder for a group of college guys and a gal until they gained ninth level, after which I became a little disenchanted with the constant rules-digging. As none of us felt inclined toward DnD 4.0, we picked this up, and I have become totally sold on it.As a GM, what I ESPECIALLY appreciate:+Making NPCs or creatures is a breeze, allowing for much more time spent on the plot, cool settings, etc.+The system is elegantly simple, and can easily accommodate any genre or action. (My players prefer it for all genres except medieval fantasy, but acknowledge it does fine there, too; they just prefer Pathfinder for that, and are psyched to be playtesting DnD Next.)+Players aren't pigeon-holed into classes, but can choose to follow an archetype if they desire. (Oddly, some of my players DO like Pathfinder's/DnD's forced specialization.) With Savage Worlds, there's also such freedom in designing characters to fit a particular protagonist from books or movies, and anyone can be meaningful, which is emphatically FALSE for many other systems.+Anyone can die quickly. Granted, this isn't what all players are looking for, but I find that this keeps players grounded and exploring options other than combat (or at least, mindless whacking) when things get dicey. They actually consider ducking and employing sound tactics from time to time!+The game is designed to be kept flowing without too much prep before OR paperwork during the game session. I love not having to keep track of hit points or many different short-term effects. This aspect has freed me up to enjoy the game as much as my players. (Admittedly, some of my players HATE not having hit points; it frustrates them to score an apparently-solid hit, only to find that that hit only skids off armor or traces a scratch down a villain's thigh. They accept it, but enjoy bemoaning the situation.)+On-line support is without peer.Long and short, I haven't found a system that better combines cross-genre playability, adaptability, efficiency, and sheer enjoyment, nor one that comes close.

Having played ADnD 2.5 for many years, I took a break and came back to a Pathfinder Campaign. About a year later a friend called and said he wanted to try to run a Cyberpunk Savage World's campaign. I was hesitant at first to try to learn an entirely new rules system, so I bought this book to learn the basics.I was very surprised at the simplicity of the rules and the open ended method of character creation. You really could build your character into just about anything the campaign accommodates. I wanted to play a combat medic type... the archetypes were doctor or ex military but with the simplicity of the game rules, I was able to easily build the exact character I had in mind. I also liked that there was a lot less math involved in this game system because it allowed me to bring in people who hadn't played PnP games before and they were able to very easily pick up on the system structure.Any DM (or GM) can easily make this as simplistic or complex as they desire, but there is a lot of freedom in this structure that I really enjoyed. I still love my old ADnD books, and Pathfinder - but Savage Worlds allowed us to run a high energy combat focused game that was an absolute blast. The book itself was highly detailed and contained excellent artwork. I found that everything was explained in enough detail that even those who had never played before were able to pick up the concepts very quickly.

If you want to get someone into RPGs and want to keep it simple, but don't want to pay for multiple rules bloated books like Pathfinder, etc. This is your game. It's a Core system for less than $10. No additional supplements needed, though of course you can always buy them if you like different settings. Only other things you need is a pack of playing cards, pennies or something to use as tokens for bennies, and a set of standard polyhedral dice and you are good to go. Very GM friendly with little prep time. Very player friendly, easy to learn. Fast Furious and Fun!As a side note: to learn about Savage Worlds, visit the Jerrod Gunning channel on YouTube, where they have a Weekly Wednesday Savage GM Hangout. There are LOTS of videos (at least 2+ years worth) of different topics on how the mechanics, settings, etcetera work....

I have been roleplaying for a long time either playing in or game mastering a number of titles such as D&D 2nd Edition, 3e, 3.5, White Wolf's Vampire the Masquerade and Werewolf the Apocalypse, Palladium's Rifts, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Crafty Games SpyCraft 2.0, Mutants & Masterminds and more.In my younger days, I enjoyed very crunchy, detailed rulesets that covered everything and a player's handbook with 300, 400 or even 500+ pages (like Pathfinder) was acceptible to me. But as I got older, I really started looking at the combat systems, most notably the D20 System after a single dragon fight took more than an hour to complete with a well geared, highly skilled party. I wanted something faster that still covered most situations and that is when I discovered Savage Worlds. The system does a wonderful job with balancing the rules against the storytelling, offers players a chance to be truly heroic while roleplaying their characters and adds to the story instead of having to whittle down hundreds of hit points. It also has a sense of real danger to the characters because even the lowest of creatures can get a really lucky shot and kill them. It is rare but it can happen. Plus Savage Worlds covers a huge variety of genres so if the group wants to switch from fantasy to futuristic, post apocalyptic, gothic horror or superheroes, Savage Worlds has it covered. This is a huge bonus for anyone that gets tired of having to learn new rule systems every time they want to play something different.

Rex Stout's 1956 novel "Might As Well Be Dead (A Nero Wolfe Mystery Book 27)" is another of his Excellent ones (I'm rating it at 5 stars out of 5). I've got no problems with it whatsoever. The pacing is really good, all the characters well done, and, of course, the writing is wonderful. If you're a Nero Wolfe follower, you don't want to miss this one.

"Might As Well Be Dead" has a crackerjack plot to go with the fascinating characters and stimulating dialogue. Archie says, "When a hippopotamus is peevish it’s a lot of peeve." It also makes for a great story.

This review is of the Kindle edition:Publication date: April 24, 2010Publisher: BantamLanguage: EnglishASIN: B003IYI6YCI have read most of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe books but had not previously read this one. I'm glad I hadn't because it was a wonderful treat to be able to read a new to me Nero Wolfe novel after so many years. The treat was made even better by the fact that this one is better than Rex Stout's excellent average. Featuring a depraved murderer and, at the beginning, a mystery with no clues, Wolfe is hard pressed to even find an opening to begin to unravel the solution.

It starts with the murder of a real estate promoter. The boy friend, and perhaps lover, of the wife of the deceased is charged and convicted of the murder.Wolfe becomes in a somewhat unusual manner for him. From there more people are murdered, a huge sum of money is found and other items that will convict the murder.I rarely ever determine the murderer before Wolfe. In this book, I did. See if you can.Just another great book from the man, that along with Erle Stanley Gardner, gave birth to the American mystery and devoted material to it for over 30 years.

Rex Stout is a master of detective fiction. Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, his trusty assistant, are so well written and such distinctive personalities. I love their life style; the orchids on the roof, Felix, the master chef, and all of the henchmen who help out on their cases from time to time. I have been reading these stories all my life and usually return to them after several years. I am so glad they have been published again so that I could add some of the books that were out of print.

Having read Stout's collection of Nero Wolfe mysteries, this one rates at the top. The opening scene appears tame and blase but Stout soon has us hooked with a convicted murderer as the.... But I shall not give it away. There should have been a sequel to this one. It's personal

In the typical Rex Stout Nero Wolfe, there are lots of carefully turned and memorable phrases. I read it the first time more than fifteen years ago. This was my second time reading it. It was just as enjoyable as it was the first time.

As always, Red Stout is a master. In this book, he shows off his sleight of hand several times, yet never telegraphs the solution. One of the faithful loses his life in this story, and not much food gets mentioned. However, there are two recipes at the end to make up for that. The roast corn is all you could wish--I tried it.Unlike others in this series, the kindle version is free of errors.
