Class Act, by Cholly Atkins

From Library Journal

This is more than a factual biography of a great artist; it is a personal encounter with an exceptional man whose winning personality shines through on every page. The story of Cholly Atkins is that of 20th-century American jazz and tap dance. As a dancer, he teamed with Honi Coles and appeared with Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and others across the country; his anecdotes about these experiences offer a keen perspective on the performing life. A versatile artist, Atkins developed "vocal choreography" specially tailored rhythmic dance routines based upon steps used by African American chorus lines of the Twenties, Thirties, and Forties. It resulted in a successful Motown career and in his role choreographing the signature moves of such groups as the Pips and the Supremes. Later, he earned a Tony award for his choreography for the Broadway show Black and Blue. His personal heartaches and struggles are addressed honestly, and his triumphs over them are inspiring. Written by the 87-year-old Atkins and Malone (drama, theater, and dance, Queens Coll.), this book resonates with charm and provides solid information about the history of American jazz dance. For entertainment collections. Carol J. Binkowski, Bloomfield, NJ Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

Cholly is one of the true icons of American culture--an original hoofer. He took social and street dances of the time and combined them with style and class, introducing a new dance genre, vocal choreography. Weaving rhythm and groove seamlessly, he created dance with flair while allowing several generations of young people to stand on his shoulders. Pops put a little dip in their hip and a little slide in their glide. He is a serious legend and one of the finest human beings I've even known. The legacy of Cholly Atkins is one that will be with us forever. We are blessed to have been touched by his magic. (Quincy Jones)He's the wellspring from whence we flow.... [He] understands the way that the human body moves, he understands the grace of dance. (Melvin Franklin, original member of the Temptations)His choreography is so unique, it's just like a Rolls Royce among a whole lot of Yugos. He's classic, man. (Otis Williams, member of the Temptations)Cholly Atkins was our everything.... He taught us how to walk onstage, how to walk offstage, how to move. (Gladys Knight)As Class Act makes clear, professional tappers formed an elite brotherhood, a society of proud, resolute strivers with no shortage of dignity, talent or wisdom. We should be grateful to Cholly Atkins for generously sharing his with us. (International Herald Tribune)To have Atkins' memories preserved is to have an immense contribution to nearly a century of American popular song and dance acknowledged, and in his own lifetime. Motown may have been just a stopover in this storied life, but we, and the company, were lucky to have him. (Terry Lawson Detroit Free Press)A personal encounter with an exceptional man whose winning personality shines through on every page...provides solid information about the history of American jazz dance. (Carol J. Binkowski Library Journal (starred review))Without having first read Class Act... you may be half-informed at best about the evolution over the past century of black dance rhythms and the importance of vernacular choreography. (Billboard.com)Class Act chronicles Atkins' amazing career, from his entry into New York City's dance world to his performing triumphs and personal tragedies to the career transformations that won him gold records and a Tony award. Anyone interested in tap dancing and/or the history of rock and roll will enjoy this book. (Dance International)

I loved this book on Mr. Atkins. Here is one of my favorite excerpts from him:"I had an authentic jazz background. What I mean by `authentic jazz' is what they basically now call street dancing - things that black black neighborhoods came up with. We've been doing those moves forthousands of year.Tap dancers basically use portions of authentic jazz dance so they'll look good as well as sound good. I am talking about dances like the Suzie Q, Charleston, and the Black Bottom; things that created excitement as soon as we came up with them. Now, right away there were adaptations of these dances and they were claimed by other people and presented in places where we weren't permitted to go. But we all know where they came from.A lot of the moves that the young kids are doing now are very familiar. They have a different beat and all that, but you look closely and you see steps there from African traditional dances."I was prompted to read more about Cholly Atkins after reading Jacqui Malone's Steppin' on the Blues, in which she dedicates a chapter to him. The book was an enjoyable read, and I learned more about Mr. Atkins and people that touched his life, especially his tap partner and life long friend, Honi Coles. I was also touched by his revelations of some very painful events in his life.I had always been vaguely aware of how important Mr. Atkins was to the development of Motown artist. But I knew nothing of his life before Motown. He was at least 50 when he became a part of their team. But most of his life he was a rhythm tap dancer. What struck me is when he said the best and most innovative tap dancer since his time is Savion Glover. Now when the master says something like that, I must take note. He says Savion is an innovator. He added a branch to an ancient tree. He has taken tap further alone and has created some complex taps.I just love those old school artists. I just have a thing for classy, well dressed men and women. The Motown machine continued the tradition of class with their performers.Thank goodness my knowledge of him is no longer vague. I want to thank Ms. Malone for introducing me to Cholly Atkins properly.

I think this book is pretty good for the 'mechanic wannabe' who's just getting started (like me). All the 50 projects are illustrated with photos which is pretty neat. At the end of each chapter, there is a troubleshooting chart listing common problems associated with the specific components that are discussed in the chapter. Now, after reading this book, I think some projects could have been a little more detailed, and some other a little less: The project on 'how to fill coolant' takes two pages front and back, but the one on 'how to change thermostat' only takes one...Also, some projects explain how to replace such and such part, but it doesn't explain why you would want to replace these parts if your car breaks down:* "how to replace distributor cap and rotor"; sounds great, but how do I know that these are the parts I need to replace if my car breaks down? It doesn't say anything about that in the electrical troubleshooting chart in this chapter.* "How to replace the starter"; sounds great too, but where do I find it? there's no diagram in this book that shows you where to look under the hood, beside a picture of a car, at the beginning of the chapter, with a front mounted engine (my car, like most front wheel drive nowdays, has an engine mounted sideway); and the car used as an example in this project is different than mine.Anyway, the point is, a little more details would have been nice. However, it is a decent book and it gave me a better comprehension of how things work under the hood. It also gave me more confidence to work on my car.My advice is: buy this book to familiarize yourself with cars, and learn very basic car maintenance stuff such as changing your oil, checking your fluids, tires etc.For bigger projects like 'how to replace a water pump' (project 29), this is probably not the book you need.

This is a fantastic book for beginners like I was. Want to know how to diagnose and fix common car problems? Understand how it works from a basic level? This is the book for you. I plan on buying more advanced books to continue learning, but I'm very happy I started here.

Good book for basic car repair knowledge but it definitely a little dated. For example, the section on replacing an air filter shows the circular compartment and filter although they do mention the "newer" air filters that are now very common. My favorite is the page on how to wash your hands.

I bought the manufacturer's detailed service instructions for all of our cars in the family, very detailed manuals with exact sketches and step-by-step guidances. Since I'm no car mechanic i also needed a book with more generic explanations so i bought this book. Perfect choice well balanced nice sketches and i like the relatively big letters, too.

The book I received has a different cover than displayed. I'm hoping that my book is the most up-to-date edition. The cover displayed on Amazon is much more visually appealing than the one I received, which makes me think I might have an older version?

I use this book more as a reference book to look up routine maintenance procedures. Book can be very technical; it is not for light reading.. This is a real good book for someone who is more knowledgeable/interested in auto mechanics (as well as physics).

I just started reading this book but, I immediately appreciate the layout and simplicity of the book. Really makes the information easy to understand and not intimidating.

A good introduction to car repair for newbies like myself. It explains a lot of how the car works and problems that might arise with those systems. It was definitely a good visual guide for some of the universal repairs (oil changes, brake rotors, etc.) but for anything heaver than routine maintenance, I would turn to a comprehensive repair manual. Regardless, it's a solid introduction to working on a car and maybe saving a few bucks in your pocket every few months!

Great book about how slaves helped build the White House. A must read!

The older kids learned something when they read this important book to the three year old.oi

Excellent read

Yes!!! Another book illlustrated by my favorite artist from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The story subject is also dramatic and moving. Just think of all the work by hands that went into construction before large machinery.

Nice history, but grades as early as four seem to find it ho hum.The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

What a wonderful book for children and adults showing the contribution of enslaved people to the building of the White House. The people worked hard with skill and dignity. This story was repeated throughout the country and particularly in the South.

My students loved the book especially the illustrations. The story is so powerful!

Great!

This is such a great book! It not only offers valuable information and suggestions on places to go skiing but it gives beautiful pictures as well. The only suggestion I have is for it to have a picture of every destination mentioned. On some of the locations it's only text and no pictures. It makes me want to plan a ski trip!

Great pcitures and descriptions. My 13 year old son hates to read but loves snowboarding, this book was perfect because he was interested in going to all these places.

Great classic compendium of Federal Indian Law!

Really thorough and easy to navigate. It has been a great resource in my legal practice.

Excellant!

My office needed a new copy of this book. We were working off the 1958 version. So updating it was worth the $$.

This is a compendium in the true measure of the word. The range of material is amazing considering it's (only) 1413 pp. Nearly half of every page is taken up by footnotes, most of which reference cases, some with brief explanations. At the back is an alphabetical Table of Cases that is 65 pp long...and it's in small print so there're enough to give even the most voracious researcher a run for her money. This is followed by 47 pp. of the Table of Statutes. And then there's the Index. And finally...the pocket part that invludes a reference to a July, 2008 Fed reg. What is astounding is how consistent the style of writing is...and it's good. It's readable without creating the suspicion they've dumbed it down and you're missing something. A deal for the price!

Federal Indian law is a very complicated subject. This book starts out with a great overview of the history of Indian law and policy. It follows with detailed discussions of every aspect of Indian law. Whether you want to know about Indian gaming (casinos), water rights, civil rights of Indians and non-Indians under tribal law, or anything else, this book has got it all! I practice in the field and this where I always start my research. It's also a great source of background material for news reporters and those interested in policy information. It also gets updated every two years, so you know you have the current information.

This is an amazing resource--every time I have an Indian Law question (and I write and teach in the field) I turn to the 2005 edition and find the answer, or at least the sources to get me on the right track. Everyone dealing within Indian law questions should get it.

Review

"Anger is a Gift is an explosion of fury and revolution. Mark Oshiro's beautiful and brutal debut proves that not only can anyone be a hero, but great change comes when the heroes work together." ―Adam Silvera, New York Times bestselling author of They Both Die at the End"Raw, unflinching, and full of heart. Anger is a Gift is a masterpiece." ―Marieke Nijkamp, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before I Let Go“This debut novel provides a riveting, devastatingly realistic portrayal of the criminalization of marginalized groups and an unwavering examination of the lasting impact of bigotry. His teenage characters have authentic intersectional depth and are developed beyond the various ways society labels them: black, Latinx, disabled, Muslim, asexual, nonbinary, gay, lesbian…the narrative is compelling, providing a new and noteworthy account that continues the conversation and depiction of society's opposition to otherness. This is not to be missed and should be placed in a prominent position in every library serving teens.”― Voya, Jewel Davis."An emotional roller-coaster." ―Publishers Weekly“A masterful debut rich with intersectional nuance and grass-roots clarity, Anger is a Gift is hella precious, hella dope.”―Kirkus Reviews, starred review"A strong addition to the current wave of excellent social justice–themed contemporary realistic titles. Give this to fans of Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give.”―School Library Journal (starred review)“Oshiro’s novel asks both its characters and its readers what to do next.” ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

#81,798 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I saw Mark Oshiro at Beach City Con in October 2017, where he presented a few wonderful panels and got me intrigued about his work. He mentioned having a book coming out the next year. On a bit of a whim, I ordered it while watching the panel and kind of...forgot about it.I was a bit surprised when it arrived, and I did take some weeks to get around to reading (or listening, as it were, since I did the audiobook), and I am so glad I did. Mark Oshiro has given us something real and painful, and very necessary.I live not too far from Oakland. The scenarios he describes are familiar. And, it's so true, as in the book, that people in power look for--and fabricate--any excuse they can to avoid responsibility.I rushed through this book. I had to finish it. The first night I was listening, I came into the office and told my husband, "This book is about to piss me off." I came back in five minutes later and yelled "I WAS RIGHT." My anger wasn't for the book's quality--perfection--but for the actions of the Oakland PD in the book. Fiction, yes, but I was able to predict their actions so accurately that it was infuriating. Because I've seen it before. At times, the book does feel a bit...schmaltzy? But not in a way that made me want to even so much as slow down. The diversity of the characters is completely believable for anyone that has spent the last few years in the Bay Area, but it was more the cultural references that made me snicker a bit. It reminds me a little of Cabot's early "Princess Diaries" books. The artists and memes referenced will date this book within a few years, but the main themes of discrimination, police violence, gaslighting, and activism will resonate for quite a while longer. And, oh, how I wish they wouldn't resonate. Because that might mean we've fixed the problems. But I doubt we will. So, when I finished this book and stomped about for a few minutes in righteous anger, I realized I wasn't allowed to just sit down, do a simple review, and be done with things.I finished this book about an hour ago. In the middle of writing this review, I went to AdoptAClassroom and fully funded an Oakland teacher's classroom. Then I set a calendar reminder to do it again every August 1st. I know I'm privileged, and likely in ways I haven't even considered. And I know I need to use that privilege wisely. And, to be honest...I do kind of throw my money at problems. But, sometimes, that's a good thing.I love this book. I've recommended it for my book club. I'll be putting it in my bag-o'-books Christmas gift for my book club. I'll be handing out my copy to anyone who looks at my shelves and asks for a recommendation. This is, simply, an excellent book.

I read this book instead of napping on a flight after getting three-ish hours of sleep, and when I finished, I immediately went back and reread a bunch of parts. Some things I loved:*Moss and his friend group, the different roles that they took and the ways in which they supported each other. (The scene with just Moss and Bits was such a surprise to me, but it was so lovely.)*The relationship between Moss and his mom. They're so close.*The way Moss and his mom interact with their friends and neighbors. Things like people coming over for supper regularly, helping each other cook.*The discussions of school funding, testing, and which colleges came to college fairs at different schools. None of those things are separate from each other, and they're also not separate from the police presence in schools, random locker searches, school metal detectors, and murders of brown and black people that the book focuses on.*Adults with a history of activism helping, supporting, and encouraging the teens. I especially liked that the adults let the teens speak and lead when the teens wanted to and took the lead when that was.*A couple of the teachers that were mentioned the most were great. Mrs. Torrance especially, but also Mr. Roberts.*So many queer characters! Multiple important disabled characters!*This is very much not a forgiveness narrative. It doesn't require its characters to forgive wrongs just because someone apologized. One of the supporting characters, Kaisha, is ace. (Another one, Reg, might be as well; he says something that makes it unclear to me?) In particular, Kaisha is biro ace, and she's really vocal about both on Tumblr. There are only a few mentions of her asexuality:*Kaisha says, "So many men thought that they were the one who could prove to me that I wasn't ace."*Njemile says, "Seriously, y'all need to follow Kaisha. I wouldn't have learned half the stuff I know about asexuality if it wasn't for her blog."*Reg says (immediately following Njemile's comment), "It's true. I wouldn't have figured out that there was a name for who I am if Kaisha hadn't blogged about being biromantic."The Tumblr framing of one key discussion of Kaisha's asexuality could contribute to ace people being seen as "a Tumblr thing." But I think Oshiro avoids that here. Kaisha's online presence across many platforms is really important to the student and community organizing throughout the book. Her online presence and activism is treated positively without fail, and so is her asexuality. There's no condescension about either one.I appreciated the acknowledgement (in the first quote I listed) of one of the kinds of harm a lot of ace folks deal with -- people trying to "fix" us or convince us that we're wrong about ourselves. I liked that Kaisha was in a romantic relationship that was portrayed entirely positively, that her asexuality wasn't treated as making that relationship lesser.A line that made the book feel more aro-friendly to me: "You would be perfectly queer even if you never dated anyone ever." There was one use of "more than a friend," though, which made it feel a little less aro-friendly.CW: police brutality and murders by police (these things happen in several contexts -- outside a market, within a school, at a school walkout, at subsequent protests. Note that one of the deaths is a queer char.), major character injury and death, panic attacks, racism and racial profiling (called out), Islamophobia (harassment of a hijabi girl in particular; called out), ableism (a lot of this is called out), body image issues (called out), misgendering of a trans char (called out).

Anger is a Gift paints a painfully real picture of racism and police brutality. It also paints a joyous, uplifting picture of family, friendship, and community. I was riveted from the first page; despite the weight of the subject matter, I read the entire book in a single sitting. The writing is beautiful, the characters are vibrant and relatable, and the story goes exactly where it needs to go.This book will make you cry and it'll make you angry - in the best way possible.

I really enjoyed this book, and sometimes contemporaries are hard for me to read. Especially, when the topic is kind of heavy.I loved Moss as a main character! I've been struggling with main characters recently, but but he was very likeable. I'm honestly not sure what to say about this book....I really liked it, I teared up a few times, and there were times that had me like "wow" I think it made me sad? But in that way of, I'm supposed to be reading this as fiction, but like... stuff like this actually HAPPENS! And it's saddening to know that it does.It almost reads like a dystopian , which in a way we kind of live in a world like it...

This book is well written, engaging, clever and just so good. All of the characters feel real, the story lines are so well done, and it's just full of heart punches. I read it in an evening because I couldn't bear to put it down. I stayed up until 1am and I have a toddler that gets up at 6! The diverse array of characters is presented without explanation to the audience, which makes it even more effective. Really, it's amazing. Read it.

This is a book about trauma and the ways that policing exacerbates that trauma in communities of color. It’s also a tale of first love that will break your heart open and then smash it.

I've read the biographies of most of the other astronauts and "celebrities" of NASA/NACA (Chris Kraft, Guenter Wendt, Gene Kranz etc) during the Mercury/Gemini and Apollo years so was quite looking forward to reading this biography on Neil Armstrong.Unfortunately it turned out to be a tough read and quite boring in places. The first few chapters deals with Neils family and ancestors with the author going back generations to Neil's Scottish ancestry. Whilst it would be ok to give a brief summary of Neils immediate family, I didn't see the need nor the point in going back so many generations. The book is written by a professor at Auburn University and it reads not like a normal biography but more like a scientific study/university textbook. If you want to know virtually every person that has interracted with Neil Armstrong over the years then this book has them. Most of them the reader really doesn't need to know about however.Later in the book, once the author takes us to Gemini 8 and the Apollo moon landing, the reading gets better but these chapters, the ones people are probably most interested in, cover only around 1/3 of the content of the book. More emphasis is given to Neils family history and what Neil has done since leaving NASA than to the actual meat of what most people would like to know, the actual first moon landing itself.Unfortunately out of all the biographies/auto-biographies of the NASA astronauts, the one that should have been the most interesting is the most dull.If you are looking for a good biography on the Apollo 11 flight, get Collins book instead. Although there is a lot of very interesting information in this book and I learned quite a bit about Neil that I didn't know, I find it hard to recommend this book.

Neil Armstrong was one of my boyhood heroes...how cool would it be to be the first man on the moon? I looked forward to reading this biography, and it finally made it to the top of my "to-read" list.=== The Good Stuff ===* James Hansen evidently had pretty good access to Armstrong. He had a wealth of personal, family and professional history, including the occasional glimpse behind the scenes. There are a few interesting tidbits and some bone-headed maneuvers throughout the years, all of which make the man "more human".* Armstrong was evidently a very private man, and very careful about what parts of his thoughts and personality were going to be available for public discussion. Occasionally Hansen succeeds in penetrating this stoic front and capturing glimpses of Armstrong's thoughts. For example, he explains multiple times that he was not at all disappointed or angered that crew-companion Edwin Aldrin never took a picture of him while on the moon. He says multiple times that it was just the way the time-line of the moon walk worked out, and he is sure there was no "revenge" factor because Aldrin didn't get to step out of the LEM first. He repeats himself, again and again. It is not hard to get the feeling that it is something that has bothered him all these years, but he is too professional to admit.* The book is certainly detailed. (See more thoughts below). Hansen carefully builds a portrait of Armstrong based on his personal, professional and military career of a man cool and calm under pressure, and capable of thinking his way through problems when all the alarm buzzers are flashing red. He relates a story of where Armstrong had baled out of a plane, nearly killing himself, early in the morning. Coworkers found him working at his desk that afternoon as if nothing had happened.* The latter parts of the book, from about the time of the Gemini launches, were much better than the beginning, and held my interest. Even the explanations of his "reclusive" behavior later in life were also very revealing and captivating.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* NASA was a great believer in weight reduction, and this book could have used some of that skill. I have no interest in Armstrong's medieval ancestors, and I have strong doubts about records that old anyway. Likewise, I really don't care that his Mother made her own wedding cake, or that it was "an iced angel food cake in three graduated layers ornamented with rosebuds and garlands". The book is full of such detail, although at least in latter parts of the book the detail actually concerns the subject. It is almost as if the author was determined to use every scrap of information he could find about Armstrong, interesting or not.* Similarly, Hansen could have added details which might not have been directly available. For example, a number of times the text mentions the problem of "roll coupling", an aerodynamic problem of high speed flight in which the inertia of an aircraft overcomes the counter-effects of its control surfaces (thanks, Google). But while the book went on for pages and pages about Armstrong's Mother's favorite teacher, it couldn't devote a paragraph or two to a phenomenon that almost killed Armstrong, twice.* By about the first ten pages, I was sick of hearing about his Mother and her religious fervor. Enough already.=== Summary ===There is a lot to like about this book, but an almost equal amount to dislike. I came very close to putting the book down for good during the first 100 pages or so, but glad I kept at it, because it definitely improved as it went on. The author genuinely seemed to like Armstrong, which is fine, but seemed to let that cloud his analysis of some of the personal and professional conflicts in Neil's life. You could almost feel Hansen taking Armstrong's side in a few conflicts.Overall, I'd recommend it to fans of the space program, but with the caveat that it is OK to skip over entire sections of the text without missing anything interesting or important.

Neil Armstrong was never one to rush into anything and it took two full years for him to fully vet Professor James Hansen as his biographer. We are the beneficiaries of Neil's well considered decision to select Hansen to tell his story.Hansen conducted 55 hours of extensive taped interviews with Armstrong and was granted unparalleled access to his family and friends. The product is a detailed, accurate, and extensive chronicle of Armstrong throughout every phase of his life. Boyhood aviation enthusiast, Naval Aviator, test pilot, astronaut, family man, and historical icon; they are all here.Authorized biographies can sometimes turn into hagiographic, and sanitized versions of the actual subject, but not here. Neil is portrayed as he was perceived by his friends and coworkers, warts and all. He was a quiet and often guarded individual whose disciplined engineering personality was well suited to the sometimes harrowing professions of test pilot and astronaut, but perhaps not so well suited to the role of spouse.Hansen plumbs the depths of one America's greatest, misunderstood, and most reluctant heroes better than any author. First Man will stand as the definitive character study of our time's greatest historical figure.

Review

“Alan Garner’s fiction is something special. Garner’s fantasies were smart and challenging, based in the here and the now, in which real English places emerged from the shadows of folklore, and in which people found themselves walking, living and battling their way through the dreams and patterns of myth.”― Neil Gaiman“The Weirdstone of Brisingamen is one of the most important books in children’s fantasy. It has been an enormous inspiration to me and countless other writers, and is as enjoyable and fascinating now as it was when I first read it, wide-eyed and mesmerized, at the age of ten.”― Garth Nix“Alan Garner is indisputably the great originator, the most important British writer of fantasy since Tolkien, and in many respects better than Tolkien, because deeper and more truthful. His work is where human emotion and mythic resonance, sexuality and geology, modernity and memory and craftsmanship meet and cross-fertilise. Any country except Britain would have long ago recognised his importance, and celebrated it with postage stamps and statues and street names. But that’s the way with us: our greatest prophets go unnoticed by the politicians and the owners of media empires. I salute him with the most heartfelt respect and admiration.” ― Philip Pullman

Whereas LOTR is an Epic scale work, Weirdstone is a much more focused, immediate tale. Yet it has an irrepressible charm. Alan Garner does an exceptional job of blending the fantastical events of Arthurian and Norse mythology against the backdrop of rural Cheshire, England of the 1970's. Building "nail-biting, on the edge of your chair" suspense in the process. To this day, I still recall the worst trial of the mind imaginable, crawling through the mines of Alderley. His characters both good and evil are beautifully drawn and the dialogue is excellent. And like Tolkien, he has a real linguistic skill in crafting appropriate names. Who can forget the evil Svarts and the Mara. Or the noble Lios Alfar. For any fan of LOTR, Weirdstone is a must read. I also think it would make for a tremendous movie ... if done properly.

One of the best fantasy works of the last century, without question. Alan Garner is a master on a level only slightly lower than Tolkien and Lewis. This is a charming yet powerful story set in Cheshire, in a mystical place called Alderley Edge, concerning a brother and sister who accidentally, and literally, stumble into Faerie. Beautifully written, weaving together elements of Celtic, Nordic and Saxon mythologies, "Weirdstone" is a perfect book for reading on a cold, rainy night in the accompaniment of hot cocoa and a warm blankie. The highest recommendation.

I read this book as a child, and I occasionally re-read it as an adult. There are extremely few books I can think of that can keep my interest for more than a few weeks, let alone thirty-odd years. It has many of the "usual" swords-and-sorcery elements you expect from a fantasy novel, but it has key differences. Everything and everyone is imperfect and therefore plausible. Sides are not clear-cut. Names are taken from actual mythology (or actual places) and aren't simply the product of hitting keys at random. The mythology is consistant. The story doesn't ask you to suspend disbelief, but creates a vivid enough "world" that the reader can live there quite comfortably for a while without suspending anything. These are the hallmarks of an excellent story and a master writer. It is, of course, meaningless coincidence that they recently found 550 ancient coins in a relatively modern copper mine, when the moisture should have corroded them a thousand or more years before the mine was ever dug, not far from where the Iron Gates are described as being. It IS coincidence... isn't it?

I first read this book back in the 1970s when I was still a munchkin. Funny how we try to return to the golden haze of childhood comforts and memories (if you're lucky enough to have had a good childhood of course - I did thankfully) as we grow older and go through troubling times. As an adult I still think this book is pretty solid and holds itself well compared to other books in the young fantasy genre. When I first read it I hadn't read Lord of the Rings yet and that book has become one of my all-time favorites. Needless to say I now see certain broad similarities in some of the themes (although this book could in no way be truly compared with LOTR) but I think that's probably because both authors used some similar source material (mythologies etc.) rather than Garner being directly influenced by Tolkien. If you're after a good young fantasy yarn with all of the classic elements (e.g. goblins, witches, wizards, trolls) then this book is a cut above most.

My all time favorite book from my childhood. I read it multiple times in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, again as an adult, and then again recently as an audio book that is brilliantly read and unabridged. Lord of the Rings meets Harry Potter in an easy-reading book written for kids but just as great of a story for adults. I'd love to see it made into a movie.

I am an adult; an avid reader, especially of classics and 'moral' tales. I really enjoy YA fiction. This little gem is a little slow getting started, but I enjoyed the tale. The characters are likable & the story believable within the context of fantasy. I look forward to checking out the sequels.

I first read this book as a child when I checked it out of the school library. It delighted me then and it still delights me all these years later. I've looked for a copy for years, and now I have a Kindle copy. It's worth every penny!

I last met this tale when I was nine years old. It is no better but it is a decent kids cliffhanger. Happily, in the intervening 49 years, I had forgotten some parts but still, I am now on the other two books from the series. Oh yes, also, the Owl Service is awaiting my time to.

Not being a music teacher, I don't feel particularly qualified to review this book. However, my 11-year-old daughter's new piano teacher recommended it for her after she took a year-long break from piano. Though most of the melodies aren't (to me) particularly beautiful, she enjoys working all the exercises and doesn't get bored. She has been progressing quickly through the book, and benefited from the first half which worked the two hands in unison -- excellent bass clef review for her, because her primary instrument is violin. The latter half is more complicated, with each hand working independently, both on notes and rhythm. There are some weird things in the book -- for example, one exercise with only an A flat in the key signature and another with only C sharps! -- but the purpose of the volume is clearly not to teach music theory. I think it's a good book for my student, who can play by ear very well. There is nothing predictable about these melodies, so it forces her to rely on her reading skills instead.

The Mikrokosmos are an excellent learning tool for the serious young piano student. It helps to alleviate some of the technical problems that students have by addressing the issues before bad habits develop. It also helps the student think about the music from a theoretical perspective and not to become too dependent upon patterns. My students that diligently use this series are better music readers. I love the songs in book 6 as well. The actual scores have nice musical fonts and are visually pleasant to the eye.

This a very good book for those that want to follow Bartok's way of teaching. His lessons definitely differ from the regular piano adult piano beginner books. Bartok makes you learn piano in a very unique way and I think that this book does a very good job of doing that.

This 1st/2nd year student found these short instructional pieces written by Bartok for his son, fascinating. It is not easy to anticipate what each piece is going to say and as such the pieces are good for reading practice. Best when used with a metronome.

This is such a good book for beginners. I've been playing piano for many years but due to being so busy, have neglected my keyboard. This has helped me get back in the swing of things.

As with any of these types of books, it has to fit the level of the student. If the level is just right, this book is going to help the student develop new skills. Obviously this is a book that stood the test of time and for good reason.

Great books. A little expensive but teaches the important fundamental lessons. Recommended by our teacher and recommended by the students.

If you can recognize some notes and know intervallic reading then Bela Bartok gives you a good set of exercises. Both hands are played in unison in the beginning so you end up ignoring one staff at first, but I'm guessing this changes over course of the book.If the student likes Bartok then this will definitely be interesting. My 5 and half year old really likes these exercises.

Review

Have you ever noticed how some of the most useful things in the world are also the most common? You can get hammers and screwdrivers at convenience stores, yet they make taking care of your home easier and more efficient. You would think that such valuable devices would become expensive and rare, but just the opposite is true. The same is true for dictionaries. They have become inexpensive and you can even get them in formats that are small enough to keep in a purse or pocket. Perhaps we should have called Edain McCoy's Celtic Myth & Magick a dictionary. After all, it does list over 700 Celtic deities, heroes, and heroines in alphabetical order, sharing their myths, correspondences, and uses in magick. This is of incredible value to anyone using the Celtic pantheon of deities in his or her spiritual system. Or perhaps we should have called it a complete guide. Besides the dictionary, it includes an introduction to Celtic tradition and lore, information about rituals, rites, festivals, ceremonies, and spells you can do. You'll also learn Celtic pathworking; invocation and evocation; and information on almost fifty popular Pagan traditions that draw upon the Celts as a source. The book also shares data on resources for supplies and even includes Celtic music and Celtic dress. But there is no reason for Edain to brag in the title. The book speaks for itself. And what it says is that it is simply the most complete book on Celtic traditions ever published. For even more details you can check out the large bibliography of sources. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Paganism, Witchcraft, or the ancient Celts. If you really want to learn about the ancient Celts and how you can put their traditions, knowledge, and wisdom to use in your spiritual practices, get this book.

I think McCoy has done a great job of putting together various elements of Celtic beliefs and mythology. A great glossary of deities and heroes that are important across Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. This is my go-to book when I begin looking for something. Have been let down yet.

Fast shipping, Book as described. Thank you very much!

This is another book I have been using for decades now. I prefer it over many other books I have used. It isn't geared towards beginners even though it has sections for them. This is a book for those that are comfortable with spell and rune casting and divination. The seasonal rituals and celebrations outlines are great and there are several areas where substitutions are discussed. Which is very handy for the experienced practitioner that isn't interested in memorizing tomes of color and herb history.

Excellent condition!

Very information. Enjoyed reading the information.
