But despite the vast power of the cerebral cortex we still do not understand that most implacable of mysteries, our neurologically (and bodily) based selves. Laura Weed in her vastly edifying "The Structure of Thinking" sheds an enormous amount of light into the dark recesses of the human mind. Weed's book is one of the best accounts of what thought is, and what it is not. Thought, according to Weed, isn't reducible to syntax, thought is not just an algorithm or computer program, the crunching of abstract symbols as part of some sort of neuronally based computation. Thought requires an 'intentional' aspect, a point of view, and our neural systems have evolved to interpret, categorize, or mark out aspects of our experience in specific ways, ways that are not reducible to computation. Weed provides some very creative and original ways of reassessing our approach to consciousness, including a very promising discussion on 'intentional causation' or what Weed dubs 'Kausation' as a way of overcoming difficulties associated with the notion of 'efficient causation' which dominates most thinking in the cognitive sciences. My summary here is necessarily an over simplification of a rich and very subtle book. But for anyone interested in a post-Cartesian process account of mind "The Structure of Thinking" is a uniquely rewarding book.

My son initially found this at the library- I knew once we had it checked out and at home for a few days we would need our own copy to soften the blow of returning the other one. He was 20 months old when we started reading it, and it's still currently one of his favorites. He calls it "seek"- because the animals are all playing hide and seek at spots birthday party. He loves to lift the flaps, describe the animals on the pages, and point to different objects within the book to say their color. We've got tons of mileage out of this one so far, and I see us reading it for a while to come!

Had this book as a child and had to get it for my sons first birthday. It's perfect! He loves it. He's at the age where he loves animals and flaps, so we read this book a lot! He's not super gentle, but the flaps are hanging in there. They aren't very thick, like some other books he has, but after having this book for months and reading it atleast once a day, they are all intact.

This is a cute lift-the-flap book. I think it's almost as good as "Where's Spot?". I like that there's an actual reason for all these animals hiding in the house (they are playing hide and seek) instead of just no reason given as in "Where's Spot?". I do think the art work is a bit odd. It's nice but it looks like an older style than and the animals seem to have tired bags under their eyes. That's very minor. I will say, the page with Helen the Hippo is our favorite. They did the curtain for the bath so well that my son still tries to open both sides. It's a joke now, but they did do the flap really well on that page.

We have most of the Spot lift-the-flap books, and this one is similar to the "Where's Spot?" one. In this story, Spot's guests at his birthday party are playing hide-and-seek, and Spot is "it". The animals that are hiding are the same ones as in the "Where's Spot?" book...and Spot's mommy is also playing the game. I thought it was too similar, but my toddler likes it, and pulls it out with "Where's Spot?" all the time. The flaps are that thick heavyweight craft paper (like the kind used for scrapbooking) and you may need to pre-fold the flaps so that toddlers don't rip them off right away in their enthusiasm to find the animals with Spot. If the flaps do come off, just use some Elmer's glue to put them back on, dry overnight, and pre-fold on the crease where it's supposed to bend, and it'll be just like new (I've repaired many lift-the-flap books this way).

The kids I work with can't get enough of spot. The lift the flap books and great to keep kids interactive and excited about the story. This book came in perfect new condition as advertised and arrived in a pretty good time frame. Love these books!

Spot is a cute puppy who brings joy to the hearts of the little listeners.Ideal choice for dog loving preschoolers.

Many of us grew up with the Spot books, and now we have the opportunity to share them with a whole new generation. This book has fun flaps, that when flipped the reader can discover more of the story. It's a very engaging book for a small child. The discovery aspect of the book really pulls the reader into the story. I highly recommend this book for a small child.

All kids love spot books LOL or at least they love pop up books. Spot is a good classic and has several different books that my students and my children and nieces all love

I wish I would have read the reviews first. First off this is not pocket sized, it’s bigger than most of the books I own, imagine a standard study bible, it’s about that size if not bigger. But the worst part is that the text is very tiny, and almost unreadable. I imagined something I could keep in a cargo pocket or the small front pouch but this is not the case. I’ll need to put it in the large pack and then need glasses to actually read it. This would not be ideal for the field.I will probably just return this and get the full sized version. Very disappointed
